youfibre router

[link to this post]

Does anybody know if the ONT supplied by Youfibre on the 2 gig service will connect at 2.5 gig to my router?

I appreciate it will probably be presented to a 10g port however I want to connect it to a draytek router in the loft via a CAT6 cable I ran though the house. This would go into a 2.5g port on the draytek 9012.

I could buy a 10g sfp+ module but not sure if it would work over about 20m with the cable twisted around lots of corners.

The ONT will do what the ONT will do. On the optical side it is presumably 2G, on the ethernet side, you can expect it to do something which will carry 2G.

The Draytek should negotiate to the ONT ethernet speed, provided it is within the capability of the port.

Yeah just wasn’t sure if it would do 2.5g. Sometimes the ports are 10 with no option for 2.5.

Think I’ve found it elsewhere now, potentially will be an Adtran ONT which will do 2.5.

If the ONT is capable of 10G, it should still negotiate down to 2.5G

It's a valid question because not every 10Gb copper port is also a 5Gbps and 2.5Gbps port, though with a device as new as an XGS-PON ONT there is a good chance. The Nokia XS-010X-Q that CityFibre use, for example, specifically calls this feature out in the datasheet:
LAN: 1x100M/1G/2.5G/5G/10G BASE-T RJ-45, auto negotiating supported

As other folks have noted, you can pretty much be assured that any ONT will be following modern Ethernet Alliance and IEEE standards in this respect with 10G (or even 5G) copper port will have the ability to negotiate all the way down to 100 Mbps.

100Mbps seems to be the lowest common denominator when it comes to 10G copper ports.

It’s not so much a problem with ONTs as such, but in wider networking if moving to 10G capable switches - then be aware of the small wrinkle that doesn’t allow them to communicate with (the admittedly diminishing) estate of legacy devices which are 10 Mbps only. It has caught me out previously which is why I mention it.
