moving house (Simultaneous Provide Orders)

[link to this post]

About to move house at the end of Sep. I have read the artical about simultanious provide orders (http://usergroup.plus.net/simprovideorders.php) to move the ADSl without a loss of connection. I would prefer to try this rather than lose ADSL for 10 days.

Can somebody from PN tell me which way round PN prefer it, contact BT first or contact PN first?

How sucessfull is this process? I can see it ending in tears. Does it make a difference if we take our telephone number with us or not?

I'm hoping to move soon and I'm starting to get nervous about moving my broadband with me especially as I pay Post Office plc for line rental and call charges with my 'phone.

|I cant comment on which is the best method (PN or BT first) as I have never been through the procedure, but from what I have read, simu-house moves are prone to problems so it would be best to expect some downtime i'm afriad.
Also in the past, moving your telephone number has also caused problems with any house moves as BT databases are notoriously slow at being updated.

Good luck with the house move and whichever method you use to move your DSL.

The way i see it is like this

YOU ARE going to loose your DSL at some point during your move.
If it does not return, you are internet less, thefore you are reliant on calling PlusNet. Now we know it takes a good number of attempts to even get throught to an option that puts you through to an operator.
We also know that PlusNets call waiting times are counted in hours rather than mins.

Are you really sure you want to go through that pain with PN?

Perhaps just ordering a new adsl circuit from a different ISP may be better? (Less hassle!)

So far I have had no major problems with PN. Perhaps because I have never had to phone the support line I have no cause for complaint.

The way I see it is that I pay

Hi there,

This is the route which PN currently recommend.

In the first instance you need to visit the Help & Support area of the portal and raise a query via Customer Services and Billing requesting the simultaneous provide.

PlusNet will give you what is known as a GQT code which you then need to pass to BT at the time of ordering the new telephone service. BT in turn will give you a new code.

Here is the Plusnet official info on this, which will be made available to you when you raise the query.

In order to reprovide the service at your new address as quickly as possible, you will need to quote the following code to BT Retail (0800 800 150) when ordering your "combined PSTN and ADSL delivery":GQT.

Please ensure BT have our code & that we have BT's asap.

With this, BT will be expecting an order for ADSL to follow from us.

Please note the charge for reproviding your ADSL at your new address is 52.88. You can choose to opt for this fee to be deferred if you wish. This means that the house move will be free & you will only pay if you leave us.

Please check that you have active credit/debit card details in order to take either the full reprovide fee or the 5.88 admin fee.

You can update these details by going to our website:

Member centre > Account Details > Payment Details section of the Portal. Please note we cannot take this one-off fee via Direct Debit.

Please get back to us and reply to this ticket stating the following information:

* BT's reference number for the order (should be in the format ABC123DE)

* Your new full address including complete postcode,

* Your new phone number if known,

* The date you'd like the service delivered,

(7 days is the minimum notice)

I hope this is of some help to you and wish you a speedy and successful reprovide and move.

Best regards

Mark, thanks for the very detailed response. Once I have a firm completion date I will get things in motion.

About 30% (success) without PN's influence in our experience and some very painful delays in resolution if it fails.

I would not touch it / recommend it ever....

I too am told that this might not be a good idea. Best would be to cease the line and then contact PN with your new telephone number and connect. You might have a slightly longer delay in activation but it is far more preferable than being in limbo with BT and PN if it goes wrong. You are no worse off and you still pay the same amount for activation to PN and I would recommend this from what I have read in the past and not only from PN but another ISP's rep.

It sounds like an SPO is best avoided. On that basis, if I cease my account with PN with the intention of starting a new one at the new address, what happens to my PN account? Does my account stay active so I can get at the mailboxes via dialup during the limbo period? What happens to my PN webspace?

I would be lying if I said I knew the answers but check with PN, I am sure they can sort those issues out.

You can do a house move with Plusnet (not SPO with PN and BT). Last time I did this (about 2 years ago) the new line was activated and when that went live the old one was ceased. I believe you can give PN the date to cease the new line and also the date you would like the new line activated.
One thing to remember with the cease and reprovide route is that if you are moving the number to the new house then it can add upto a week to the process as the old house needs to be ceased before PN can order the reprovide at the new one. For limited downtime it is best to get a new number at the new house.

if it helps any, I used the simultaneous provide order and was out of action for three weeks. Now for this, I lay the blame firmly at BT's end, although, I really do think that PN could have done a buit more to chase it for me. Hopefully it works out a wee bit better for you
