Poor FTP speed?

I have been up and downloading some large photos (>2MB each) files from my plusnet FTP space and its really slow. Anyone else noticed the same?

I sync at 6500 and my http speed tests are not great (adslguide: 300 KBs gignews 450KBs) but the zen and bt speed tests give me >600KBs downloads

My pings are quite poor too (have been for a week)

plusnet: Minimum = 43ms, Maximum = 48ms, Average = 45ms
bbc: Minimum = 36ms, Maximum = 40ms, Average = 37ms
jolt: Minimum = 35ms, Maximum = 36ms, Average = 35ms

I have tried the cgi and the standard webspace, both onlygive me 10KBs - 30KBs

I tried a uk uni linux ftp site to test that too and I get 40-60KBs where I usually get up to 700KBs

Hi there,

Yes, i've been experiencing the same issues with FTP for a little over a week. For most of the day, FTP speeds are appaling (to both Plusnet's webspace and external webspace).

This is also the case with applications such as MSN Messenger (it's file transfer capabilities).

HTTP speeds are consistently fine.

I have received little help from Plusnet, over this issue.

Bingo. PN blame people (ab)using encrypted p2p clients. They think they'll have a fix applied to their Ellacoya traffic management platform in a little over a week.

Yep, sounds like this is gonna be the problem. Looks like P2P isn't the only thing this is affecting.

We have recently identified a potential problem with the code that forms part of the Ellacoya upgrade. We will continue to conduct testing until we are confident we are in a position to implement the upgrade on the live platform.

Exactly the same thing happened to me a few times before when they were playing around with their ellacoyas.

HTTP was fine, FTP was shot during peak times.

FTP was hitting about 5 kBps edit: originally thought it was 5kb/s, but nope was 5kB/s, oh well, either way it's pretty naff.

I started a ticket and they wanted me to test when they could be bothered to get their network guys onto it, sometime after 1am (when the problems weren't happening) . Luckily I'm not a person who uses FTP a great deal at all, so needless to say I couldn't be arsed and just waited a few days for it to clear up.

Good luck if you're going to try and get them to fix although I probably wouldn't hold my breath. Sounds like they know this is going to cause a few issues.
