Question re: SNR threshhold increase

[link to this post]

Hi All

I would appreciate any advice or suggestions from anyone who has had their SNR/margin threshold increased. have requested that mine be increased, and it seems that today something is definitely happening.Today.I got home from work to find that interleaving had been switched on, and my downstream rate was sync'd at a shade under 5000Kbps. with a SNR/margin of 15db.All afternoon I have been seeing disconnections and when the connection is established again I have a different downstream rate on which the SNR/margin changes a few times and then another disconnection and reconnection again at a different sync speed.

Can anyone who has had this done tell me if this is a normal procedure, and that at some stage it will settle on a sync speed and SNR/margin? and if I need to do anything at my end to assist the process? If so how long does the process take.

Just wish to know if this is how it happens or I still have a problem of some description.

Thanks for any advice or feedback

Ian, It would seem that your line is in the "learning" process which will cover the first 10 days of your MaxDSL connection. I would advise you to leave it alone except that you should re-boot the Router about once a day but no more frequently than once in 4 hours.

Your line shold settle down in a couple of days and in about 10 days, RAMBO will set your bRAS profile to determine your maximum stable (data) rate. You should read the stuff on Kitz' excellent website.

Thanks for the reply.

I had given thought to that possibility..... but was not sure if the 10 day learning period applied to having ones SNR increased to try and combat an extremely temperamental connection that seemed to result from a sync speed of 8128Kbps and a SNR/margin of 6db.

Trouble is when I was initially upgraded to MaxDSL I don't recall having so many disconnections as I have been experiencing this afternoon; hence my concern as to if this should be happening or not.

Oh! ..... I thought you were still in the initial 10 day window.

When I was having problems with my line, the BT ADSL Engineer visited and he got the ADSL Helpdesk to restart the 10 day learning period. However, it re-started with a 12db Min SNR Margin and I didn't see as much instability as the first time.

Are you able to hear any noise on your Voice service?

"Are you able to hear any noise on your Voice service?"

Not any more: BT took from aprox 1330hrs till 2130hrs to sort that one out on Friday, and there was terrible crackling on the line before I logged it as a problem. So on Saturday when my connection started dropping again it seemed I was not left with too may options....... mind you at one stage my router was doing a creditable job of hanging on to the connection at 1db of SNR :-)

Well fingers and everything else crossed it has been steady at 7104 Kbps and 11-12db for an hour now.

Same here. Had advice from my ISP who contacted BTw and had SNR target increased and interleaving switched on.

I was just having a few disconnections between 10pm ish and 3 am ish but since BTw made the changes I can go days without a disconnection and now if I do get a disconnection it is one for the night then everything is usually ok.

Hope that helps

My posts are my opinions unless stated otherwise.

Just one question if I may. When you had your SNR target increased do you recall a lot of disconnections and reconnections at a wide range of sync speeds for example after reconnections my sync speeds have ranged from just above 4000Kbps to 7500Kbps...... if I can establish that is meant to happen and part of the process; then I will know I still don't have an underlying problem: as that is the only that that concerns me about the process.
