Hi,
I got a couple of emails this morning saying that i have be upgraded to max.
The problem is that my router a Netgaer 834 is reporting the following figures:
Downstream
Connection 3136kbps
Line Atten 61db
Noise Margin 0-6db
Upstream
Connection 448 kpbs
Line Atten 15.5db
Noise Margin 16db
Reading around it seems to me as though the downstream line and atten is not good.
My question is that this is only the first day, but is this likely to change over the next nine?
I used to be on the 2meg package which was a solid 240kpbs dl speed. Now I'm getting anywhere between 1.2-1.8 meg download .
BTW i have checked with the router in the BT master socket and I get the same results. The splitter is only a standard on provided by Netgear, will a better quality increase my results??
Thanks
satpal

The BRAS Data Rate is probably still at the 2Mbps point, you'll only ever get a BRAS Data Rate of 2.5Mbps, so unless the upstream is important to you, staying on a 2Mbps may have been a safer bet. THOUGH with 61dB attenuation BT are not likely to give you 2Mbps - sounds like you had it via the false green mistakes

Hi,
What is BRAS data rate???
I had alot of trouble getting adsl in the first place, they kept saying I fibre/TPON on my line, actually it still does, anyhow i got it and it was solid at 2 meg.
When I was on 2 meg I used one of the calulators to work out how much i could get using the SNR/Attenuation values i had then and it came back with 3meg was possible.
I signed up for it ages ago, before all the [censored] kicked off with Adsl Max.
Well I gues i'll have to live my mistake
Thanks

Is it a Netgear DG834GT router? If so then it can be tweaked to adjust the sync speed yourself.

Hi,
I don't have a DG834GT but I have a DG843G v3.
What are the sync speed setting, is it the VPI/VCI settings??
Thanks

How do you adjust the synch speed on the Netgear DG834gt??

No.
The "sync speed" people refer to are not settings as such - you have little or no control over them - they are simply the downstream/upstream connection speeds with which your router "sync" to the exchange.
After logging into your Netgear, you will probably go straight to the "Router Status" page ... "Router Status" is one of the options down the left hand frame. If you click on the "Show Statistics" button at the bottom of the Status page, you get a popup window which displays all the info discussed here. At the bottom of this popup you see your sync speeds (Connection Speeds), Line Attenuation, and Noise Margin. Another significant figure in this window is your WAN "Up Time". This is usually reset (to zero) whenever you have a disconnection.
I find that with DslMax, the Upstream sync is 448. In fact all three Upstream figures have remained fairly constant since 14May (the day I was maxed). It's just the Downstream figures that fluctuate - from day to day, and during the course of the day. The Line Attenuation is generally fixed - this is a measure of the quality of your line to the exchange. You "hope" it's as low as possible ... anything bordering on 60db is bad news. Mine is 37 or 38db, and I'm 1.65km ("straight") from the exchange.
There seems to be a "trade-off" between Downstream sync (CS) and Noise Margin (NM). The higher the CS, the lower the NM. If the NM hovers around 6db, particularly late in the evening, then you may suffer disconnections. This is not a problem in itself - your Netgear will automatically re-connect - but it generally reconnects at a lower sync. If this keeps happening regularly, then the BT "monitoring" process will respond by adjusting your "profile" - downwards!.
I think I would just leave the Netgear ON 24/7, and let it get "on with it". I emailed Netgear tech support shortly after purchasing my DG834GT, and the advice was never to switch the router off! Not very "green" I suppose, but who am I to argue!

You can "tinker" with the DG834GT figures by doing what's called a "telnet session"
There is a "trade-off" between NM (Noise Margin) and CS (the downstream Connection Speed). In a telnet session, you adjust the NM by a % value (up or down), and the CS will automatically readjust to this change. The router won't reboot, and the WAN Up Time remains unchanged.
Here's how it works:
- NB! I always use IE for this ... Mozilla Firefox doesn't seem to "like" it
- Open up IE and in the address bar type "http://192.168.0.1/setup.cgi?todo=debug" (no quotes)
- You should now get a white IE page with just the words "Debug Enable!"
- Leaving the IE page as is, click Start > Run > cmd (I'm assuming you're using WinXP!)
- At the Command prompt enter:"telnet 192.168.0.1" (no quotes)
- you should now get a "BusyBox" shell with a "#" prompt
- at the "#" prompt enter: "adslctl configure --snr N" (no quotes)
(where N is a % value of the SNR. Less than 100 will decrease the SNR, greater than 100 will increase it)
- enter "exit" to close the "BusyBox" shell, then "exit" again to close the Command window.
- if you now go back to IE and re-enter the usual Netgear login addr ("http://192.168.0.1"), you should find that the downstream NM (and the CS) have changed.
- at this point, you can repeat the "telnet session" to make further adjustments.
I've no idea if this also works for earlier DG834 models. And I don't know if it would "hurt" to try! - probably not.

I can't do this on my DG834G V3 there is no such command.
Thanks anyway

Interesting. I wonder if the "Debug" feature was deliberately removed in the v3 model. The method I described seems to work on the v2 model - do a Google for "DG834g,telnet".
This DG834G - New 3.01.25 Firmware forum is particularly interesting.
But another link suggests that the "Debug" feature is a "vulnerability"! Clearly it's a hack. I wonder if Netgear have quashed it!
.. I suppose I should have asked "What particular command" doesn't work?
