Help - low speeds on ADSL max 1.6km from exchange

[link to this post]

I've recently been maxed by plusnet and my line syncs at approx 2.5Mbps.

The thing is I'm fairly close to the exchange (1.6km as the crow flies) but have poor attenuation figures (Downstream: 50db, SNR Margin varies from 3-11db) These figures are taken from when the router is plugged into the test socket after taking off the faceplate of the master socker.

According to the BT Address checker, it estimates I should get speeds of 5.5Mbps-8Mbps, but when I use the phone number checker, it tells me I'll be capable of 2.5Mbps. Does the phone checker go off the actual line stats rather than just distance from exchange?

Basically, I reckon I have a substandard line. Does anyone know if reporting this to BT would make any difference? Or has anyone had any experience with this sort of "problem"?

Thanks.

You're right, a 50db LA is far too high. I'm 1.65km "straight" from the exchange, and my downstream LA is 37db.

I don't think BT will "listen" to you unless it's a telephone/voice problem. If it's a problem with BTw's adsl equipment at the exchange (very likely) then you'll have to raise a ticket with PN and get them to talk to BTw on your behalf.

Thanks for that.
I'll raise a ticket with them and see what happens!

Cheers

I'm in the same situation - ATCF my line is 1.56km, but I've been advised that teh line is actually 2.26km - yet I've got a DS att of 52dB. BT tester says speeds of up to 4.5Mb for me. I sync at between 5 and 6Mb and my BRAS is 4.5Mb.

I believe that with my line length I should not have this high att and I've raised this with BT and they've basically told me tough luck.

I started looking at the lines of people around me and the BT tester all reports that same speeds. I need to start looking at the lines further away from me towards the exchange to see if there is a sudden drop in speeds indictating a fault in that area - Maybe BT might investigate if I tell them where to look!!

Well I have a different, but similar problem. I live less than 1 km from my exchange. My downstream attenuation is 23 and my margin is 24. According to BT's line checker I should be getting at least 5.5 Meg. However I barely graze 2 meg and have NEVER seen it faster than that. If anything my line was slightly faster before I was LLUed. I mentioned this to PlusNet before by ticket, by emailing the CSC and by raising it here, but have had no satisfactory response. (Even when somebody was assigned to "take ownership of my problem"). Can't see how this sort of problem will ever get resolved when neither the ISP nor the wholesale provider are remotely interested in investigating.
