Reverse DNS Records

[link to this post]

I was made aware about a year ago that PlusNet compromised the privacy of their customers by incorporating their username directly into the RDNS record for their (fixed) IP address. If your username is made up (as it will for many) from your actual name, this information will be easily visible to any location on the net that you visit unless you are using an anonymous proxy.
I thought that I had (permanently) resolved the issue by getting PlusNet to amend the relevent RDNS record to something else but they reported a problem with the database on 6th November stating that "amended" records had reverted back to the default setting of "username.plus.com".
Although the problem has now been resolved, I'm concerned that the change I thought was permanent obviously isn't.
I raised a ticket to enquire whether I could change my username or do something else to ensure that the RDNS record was permanently set to something which respected my privacy. The only solution offered by PlusNet was moving to another ISP!
I had a random look at some of the records in the PlusNet address block using http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/ptr.ch?ip=84.92.xxx.xxx and I was amazed at how many names were revealed.
Do you think that all customers are fully aware of this or are most simply not bothered?

The vast majority wouldn't have a clue what you just said and I dare say most probably also wouldn't care either.

The last service status on this issue did state that while the script had completed, it did not fix all occurrences of this problem as they had expected so they are still investigating those that are left.

The change to rDNS should have been permanent and is what PN are aiming to get back too once they discover why it reverted to the default.

As for whether people know, the vast majority won't and won't care as they have no understanding of both the concept or affect it could have. In practice it does not make that much difference to your security, it not as if everyone is getting 100s of spam messages every day.

I doubt many customers know,

I think the "John Smith"s you won't care
But if you're a "J. Cheever Loophole" then it could matter to you.

It's unlikely many with bother to fine out more,
either don't care, or to them
"ignorance is bliss" as far as PN is concerned.
