I was made aware about a year ago that PlusNet compromised the privacy of their customers by incorporating their username directly into the RDNS record for their (fixed) IP address. If your username is made up (as it will for many) from your actual name, this information will be easily visible to any location on the net that you visit unless you are using an anonymous proxy.
I thought that I had (permanently) resolved the issue by getting PlusNet to amend the relevent RDNS record to something else but they reported a problem with the database on 6th November stating that "amended" records had reverted back to the default setting of "username.plus.com".
Although the problem has now been resolved, I'm concerned that the change I thought was permanent obviously isn't.
I raised a ticket to enquire whether I could change my username or do something else to ensure that the RDNS record was permanently set to something which respected my privacy. The only solution offered by PlusNet was moving to another ISP!
I had a random look at some of the records in the PlusNet address block using http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/ptr.ch?ip=84.92.xxx.xxx and I was amazed at how many names were revealed.
Do you think that all customers are fully aware of this or are most simply not bothered?
