I don't want to take this off topic, but it occurred to me when forming another answer, that exchange congestion can occur at any time and I was wondering when BT determine its time to increase capacity. I mean if a handful of heavy users on 8M where using it say 11am to 2pm, that could cause a slow down for everyone? I guess we are just at the mercy of BT and our fellow neighbours on that. Sorry to be dragging this away.

I think Andrew has hinted at one. If people are registering their telephone details on this site when doing speed tests TBB should be able to offer a comparison on what other people are seeing on the same exchange but through different ISPs. I think if that goes into operation it would be a very powerful and useful tool for people.

Only if the results are made viewable?

If that is going to happen WOW that would upset some ISP's who use that as an excuse.

Not totally conclusive. An exchange may have multiple DSLAMs and only one may be affected. We have no way of knowing which DSLAM we are on.

LOL

And I bet all the Plusnet customers are on the same DSLAM, the one that just happens to be showing red

That would really depend on the numbers of results against an exchange. The higher the number, the better it will paint an accurate picture.

They might just show what the average speeds are on the exchange but if they want to make it really useful it would be advisable to also show the breakdown grouped by ISP and sync rates too IMO.

Good point - BT may well have a policy in some exchanges of allocating users to the DSLAMs according to their ISP.

Yep unfortunately if you are on a particular one, you get stuck on the red one
