Changing default mailbox

[link to this post]

This sudden surge of spam is being addressed to my default mailbox which, as I have an older account, is [email protected]

In order to stop the spam, I would like to turn off the 'catch all' option and also change this default mailbox to [email protected]

There seems to be no way of doing this via the 'Email Settings' section in the Member's Centre on the Portal.

Can this be done ?

If not, could I get PlusNet to do it for me ?

Fortunately for me, the email address I give other people is actually [email protected], so the only reason it's been delivered to me in the past is because the 'catch all' setting has been turned on ! Changing the default mailbox will therefore not impact on my genuine mail - only the spam.

Create yourself a new mailbox (which you will access using 'username+mailboxname) - probably called 'firstname'
Then click catch-all tab and turn off the catch all.
Then open a ticket to ask PN to blackhole your default mailbox

From this point on only mail sent to [email protected] will come through. Although you don'tg technically change your default mailbox, it does the same thing. You just need to change the authentication username in your mail program from 'username' to 'username+mailbox'

The trouble as I see it is Plusnet's emails (newsletters etc) are sent to the default account [email protected] which if that is blackholed you won't see them - including any apology mail!
The current default needs to be blackholed, and a new default created. Maybe go back to using Postmaster@user instead of user@user?

I changed mine as follows
I created an account postmaster@username and then an account spam@username. Then made spam@username the catchall.
Then created an account in Outlook username+postmaster.
The effect of these was to download my postmaster messages but nothing else. I then occasionally checked spam@username using webmail to see it anything had slipped into there which I wanted to see. Otherwise I just deleted them all (I can't do that at the moment but I don't care.)

Hi,

The way I would do it is create the new mailbox and set the aliases you want (e.g postmaster) then turn off the catch-all address via the portal. Raise a ticket and ask for username@username to be blackholed and the support team can do that for you then just use the new mailbox instead of the default one.

Mails are sent to postmaster@username and a nominated address that can be anything, so I'd say set the new address as anything you like and add postmaster to it as an alias then set the contact address on your account to which address you want.

Cheers Dave. From what I'd been reading I thought postmaster had been replaced with user@user.

Thanks Dave.

I've configured a new mailbox as [email protected], set my Outlook to only pick up email from this mailbox and turned 'catch all' off.

The problem is that postmaster is an alias that's already associated with my default mailbox and I don't seem to be able to remove it, meaning that I can't add postmaster as an alias to my [email protected] mailbox.

This means that PlusNet's emails won't get through. What can I do about that ?

Mark your new account to be the default address AFAIK.

"Mark your new account to be the default address AFAIK"

There's no obvious way to do this unfortunately. The default mailbox cannot be deleted or changed and the only thing you can do when you 'edit' one of your other mailboxes is to change the password.
