possible fraud after plusnet hacked

[link to this post]

I dont know if this is a coincidence but, I just had a call from my banks fraud department. They said that a transaction has tried to go through for a company called Kiwi Sports International in France. They said it was denied 2 times. The card details used were from a card I had in 2005. I have had numerous new cards since then.

The coincidence is that my card was used to pay for Plusnet broadband and the last time it was used was October 2005. I migrated from Plusnet and started to use another card for my new ISP.

I rang Plusnet support and they said it must be from somewhere else because "as far as he knows, no account details were compromised".

I find it strange that after 2 years someone has suddenly tried to use an old card.

Is this just a coincidence?

I would tend to think it's just a coincidence. After all that's happened in the past it would be suicidal for PN to deny billing details were compromised if in fact they were.

It properly is co-incidence. But I'd still want more investigation from PlusNet. They've stated they don't think any personal details were compromised, and for the most part I'd trust them on this, but we cannot be 100% sure they know everything. I'm not implying they're covering up, just that they may not know. After all, they can't seem to track down where, when or how all the email addresses got into the databases that were leaked...

But it's definitely possible the details were obtained through some other means. There are a lot of ways to get info like this. But I'd definitely chase PlusNet up a bit more. As well as looking at any other ways you may have let the information vulnerable.

Maybe it is a coincidence,
but strange how an old card has been suddenly used!

And PN seem to have gone very quiet on the issue in the last week,
questions still remain unanswered.

From the info given about the security problem it is very unlikely the affected server(s) would have access to customer charging details as they are concerned with EMail.

If you are concerned I would contact Plusnet and explain your concerns. It is down to them to reassure their customers after the recent problems.

I agree If I was the OP I would chase it up as
"as far as he knows, no account details were compromised".
isn't a denial.

Have you had any cards lost or stolen? I ask, since you say that you've had numerous since 2005.

No. I just kept breaking my cards. The strip cracked on each card.

I didn't want to be exact when I said numerous but I have had 2 cards since.

The first replacement, I squashed my wallet and the plastic snapped on the card.

These were never lost or stolen.

Have you bought anything from TK MAXX between 2003 and 2004? If so, your card may have been one of the 45 million or so transactions that were pitched from that organisation?

I have seen no other reports of credit cards being used fraudulently from PN and ex PN customers. If CC details had been compromised (which I doubt as PN have done a thorough investigation) I would have expected to see more people querying like you.
