Moving from plusnet to virgin

My brother in law has had a tv/phone/internet package offer which suits him so is moving from +net. He currently has his TV through Virgin and has cable. As he is not moving to another BT package does he still need to get a MAC code from plusnet and if so will Virgin need it. Sorry if the question is naive but as I personally have never swapped broadband suppliers before (been with =net since 2003 when broadband first became available to me) I have no experience of the process.

Yes at BT will need to move "ownership" of his broadband from PN to Virgin.

If you are moving to Virgin cable phone then you don't need A BT line and this means two things you don't need a MAC and it will mean cancelling the broadband from the BT line which carries a charge of £20 payable to Plusnet

Do you mean the ADSL? The line cancellation via Plusnet would only be if it is through Plusnet in the first place. It may be BT Retail, and I'm not aware of any cancellation charge unless on one of the new fancy contracts..

It is the broadband cancellation charge not the phone line per se http://www.plus.net/support/customer_service/billing...

Could he migrate to standard Virgin ADSL via BT and then switch his Virgin product to cable as a way of avoiding the £20 cancellation? Or would Virgin charge for a switch from ADSL to cable so he wouldn't win anyway?

I don't see how. Surely at some stage the BT cessation charge would apply, either when migrating to Virgin LLU (is this really C&W?) or, if that were not available, when migrating from Virgin Broadband via IPstream (BT Wholesale).

I wasn't aware they did LLU anyway. Isn't Virgin Media ADSL just BT IPStream (ADSL Max) like any other?

I take the point about Virgin swallowing the charge - I forgot it was the ISP that actually passed the BT charge on (or not). As for Virgin doing LLU, it appears so, through C&W, but I shouldn't have thought it were worth their offering it in cabled areas.

I was living in un-blissful ignorance. Darn hard to find on their web site though - I tried before I asked. So this time I did a search in the site and got the allyours.prefix.

my persoanl advice from personal experiance with virgin is DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRC- do this i had HIDEIOUS latency issues with them when i was on them the are THE second worst isp i have ever had with bulldog dsl being THE worst i ever had (with bulldog in short, i took their service and had 8 days dsl connection in a 2 MONTH period, at which point i called breach of contract and walked)

DEF look at other isps and avoid virgin like the plague
