Download Speed

[link to this post]

How can the PN speedtester say I am getting 665kB/s while Firefox is downloading a 12Mb file at approx 5.7kB/sec?

One of them has to be wrong!

Nope, they are most likely both correct.

The speed test is to a dedicated testing server and is not 'traffic managed' by PlusNet.

The download will be 'traffic managed' both by PlusNet and most likely the server you are downloading from. Even more so by PlusNet if you are downloading from one of the known file hosting/sharing websites.

Bear in mind also that we're in "Operation B" tonight on account of the huge MS Patch Tuesday.

Bob posted details here:

Aren't the download Servers which deliver the updates on the "download servers list" and as such "managed" already?

Yeah i know how you feel, I really only use the internet at nights because like most people i work during the day. Therefore the only time i can use it is when its at its most restricted. Its like paying for 8mb and getting worst than my original broadband package say 5 years ago. Really fed up of it.
Wish i would of done more research before i signed up for such a [censored] poor package. Needless to say, im out as soon as its over.

As I understand it, from 22 October you are on 10 days notice. The 18-month idea is gone, with retrospective effect.

I got 11 downloads from MS on Tuesday. A grand total of 34.6MB. I don't think that is going to scare anyone. Unless the huge one was for XP. I'm on Vista Home Pemium.

Yes, Bob is correct. From 22 October, all contracts with PlusNet can be terminated with 10 days notice.

You will still have to pay any "Deferred Charges" such as Connection, Migration, Router, House Move etc. if you are leaving within 12 months, and unles you are migrating you will have to pay the £20 termination charge.

As a matter of interest, on BB Premier Option 1, what is the managed speed for downloada at 10pm, normally and under Plan B or at least what is the category for downloading Zonealarm - HTTP Download servers or HTTP download sites or something else?

So it looks like it depends what package you're on, I was on BBYW3 and was suffering poor usenet speeds when I should have been getting line speed, I changed to BBYWPro and it's been good although I only have a 15gig peak time allowance, if I have to download anything I usually wait till off peak and do it then and have line speed, mind you I'm never complacent about these things I know things can go wrong over night

But, he will have paid the £6-99 postage when he got the Router so the deferred charge should only be £29-99.

In a word, No.

You will find that you agreed to pay for the Router if you left PlusNet within 12 months. The Router belongs to you.

Some other ISP's provide you with a Router on "loan" for the durstion of your service from them. The Router remains the ISP's property at all times.

As Wheel_nut says, we offer the routers on a 12 month deferred contract - you only have to pay for it if you leave within the 12 months.

I have been thinking about the slow download speed I was experiencing and on reflection what PN are doing is probably right, they are big into managing their network and that is all they are doing - so apologies for my 'abysmal' comment

Yep, it seems to have been somebody at Plusnet getting mixed up with W7 release this week and nothing to do with the issue at the time.

They have gone back to Plan A for the weekend but are returning to Plan B, a new central pipe is being installed this week along with more capacity so that should sort things out, things were thrown into turmoil during a pipe drop last week
