How much traffic on each queue - find out

[link to this post]

http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/tbbmeter/t/3741667-...

A change I've made to the beta which is more widely available now is to look at the QoS byte in the IP Header information, and split this information out. I am interested in Plusnet users confirming this is working.

Running it now and the interesting result is that browsing on Timesonline most of the traffic is split between Gold Plated (0x60) and Bronze (0x00). The bronze is because a lot of the graphics come from Akamai servers

An extension to the current version would be to track the QoS on a per IP basis, certainly can do it, just need to extend the code slightly.

There is a possibility you need to enable the telnet interface - try this in the browser first http://192.168.0.1/setup.cgi?todo=debug

Not the case, we don't access the router at all, just local interfaces on the computer

The app as an administrator request manifest attached, so should ask you for permission to run, BUT given the wide variations in how Vista can run you may need to Run As Administrator

If that does nto fix it, can you tell me whether its Vista 32 or Vista 64 bit?

Hi Andrew,

I downloaded your tool last night and it seemed to be working. However, after hibernating and resuming the Laptop this morning, the data doesn't seem to be updating.

What security software are you running? It is possible that this is blocking the application, while it does not talk to the internet (apart from when you use the DNS resolution), it does require access to the network to see all the internet data

ive found away to monitor traffic on my wireless by bridging my wireless adapter and lan and monitoring the bridged mini port.
If that dosent make sense ive posted a couple of screen grabs here http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,8088...

also is it only looking for incoming packet as ive done test and wireshark at same time dosent pick any 0x00 bronze incoming at the same period as this app recording 0.7mb of bronze

all wireshark has that arnt tvcatchup gold packets is the outgoing packets and some ssdp protocal between my router but ssdp dosent even have a DS field so i can only asume that its counting outgoing packets as well that havent been marked yet

I just ran it with the only internet activity being streaming from the BBC iPlayer and there was still some 0x00 traffic showing which is obviously not correct

How much traffic?

Browsers are fickle and there may have been toolbar update checks, and a myriad other bits of software doing a bit of chatting.

Even the video player may do a small amount of comms over a bronze port/

The total is up/down for WAN traffic

I'm on PAYG which has all download traffic Gold or better and tried sending an email with a large attachment, I can see that this has all clocked up in the Bronze queue.

The traffic management should be on download only as that this the only side that is managed (in any case how would an upload be classified if initiated by the user? - surely that would need the user to install special interface software to be installed on the PC to intercept and correctly classify every outgoing packet).

Akamai content is in the Gold Plated queue, *not* the Bronze queue.

As jelv has alluded to, the upstream traffic is not given a ToS marking as it won't have been anywhere near the Ellacoyas at that point. Classifying upstream traffic as bronze is likely to confuse people and I'm pretty sure it's the reason for the bronze traffic you saw too Jim.

its all feedback to help you create an app that maybe used by plusnet users alot i know i will be using this app ito back up my many rants on the PN forum.

am going to have a crack at getting it to work directly on my two diffrent wireless usb adapters but as ive used xp and vista with 2 diffrents makes of adapter so i doubt it lies in my setup.

p.s
when i run wireshark i select an interface called "microsoft device with a string of numbers" wireshark dosent show my wireless usb adapters

Bob, I am on Legacy PayG. Shouldn't ALL of my traffic be running at "Line Speed" and not 0x0.8 speed?

wheel nut we came to the conclusion that the app is counting the upstream traffic as well hence why pro and payg users are also seeing 0x00 bronze recorded.

you shouldnt see anything under 0x80 gold on payg, if you getting gold plated and sliver allso as 0x00 bronze then somthing is wrong

Thanks Asbo. Yes, that explains the Bronze traffic. I am not getting anything in the Gold Plated and Silver streams so I am on the correct profile.

It still doesn't explain why my traffic is throttled to 0.8 because it is supposed to be at Line speeds ... or is it?
