Couple of questions on joining

[link to this post]

I'm thinking of going with plusnet for cheapness for a weekend/half week home in the boonies. I was wondering how long activation is from completing the online sign up? Also, the ex owner of the house has moved out so no mac key. Also what kind of wireless router do they provide?

I have checked on the plusnet site and it says estimate 4Mb which I'd be chuffed with considering its fairly rural.

Any input appreciated.

Router is a Thompson 585v7
The fastest way to speed up the activation is to use a credit card for the first payment so they aren't waiting for the direct debit to be setup.
Has the ex owner cancelled the broadband - if he hasn't that will play havoc with the timescale as there may be a tag on the line.

If you're a new broadband customer: your broadband will be activated at least 5 working days from the date you signed up.
So I would assume that is the minimum - unfortunately it is all down to BTw.

Are you aware of the expected speed tables?

Thanks Roberto for that alert.

I expect since I'll be there probably a couple of weekends a month that the most usage will be for email, surfing, news, some live streaming maybe and the the odd download so I guess I should be ok. Unless you have something equally inexpensive but better to recommend?

Nothing as cheap. But it's only a 10-day contract anyway so no real need to worry. I assume you won't set up and use any Plusnet email addresses.

Otherwise, reading your previous thread, Newnet or AAISP with its fancy 2010 pricing, with GB roll-over. I think that would be my choice if PN doesn't work out in practice.

For instance, if you are taking a laptop there, with Windows already up-to-date, fine! But if you have a machine that needs Windows updates those come under the throttling regime.

Hi Roberto

Well I looked at Newnet which seems a cheaper and better option for 1 year http://www.newnet.co.uk/broadband/homelite_nd.php or am I missing something?

I was figuring on a 1 year contract for about £120 a year inclusive is not bad when setup and free router is included so wondering if that may be a better option than the plusnet 30 upfront cost plus cost of buying router.

Umm...

You are looking at Newnet LLU which is very restricted in its distribution. I don't think you specified your exchange, but on this page there is a drop-down list.

The BT-based ones ones are here.

You only have to pay the Plusnet setup and router costs if you leave within 12 months. Haven't you already got a router?

Ah thanks for pointing that out Roberto, I wasn't paying attention obviously.

I guess it's plusnet then.

I'm figuring the cost of plusnet on 12 month contract is £120.00 approx inclusive.

Without the contract it's £30 for setup £50 for modem (no I don't have a spare) plus the number of months subscribed to.

All in all I guess the 12 month is probably the best option even if I bail out midway for some reason?

Sorry I've been rushing a bit with the move on at the mo so not paying 100 pct attention but appreciate you being a bit more thorough than me!

cheers

I don't think there are any broadband disasters looming whichever you go for.

Good luck with that, and more importantly with the new place.
