Sync speed has reduced from 8128Kbps to 4128Kbps...

I noticed that my downloads have been a lot slower these past few weeks and after checking my router stats it seems that my sync speed has dropped from the full 8128 Kbps to 4128 Kbps.

Here is my current router stats:

Downstream Rate: 4128 Kbps
Upstream Rate: 448 Kbps
Downstream Margin: 12 db
Upstream Margin: 24 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 25
Upstream Line Attenuation: 14

My broadband has been syncing at the full 8128 Kbps solidly for years without any problems until now. My downstream margin used to be around 6-8db @ 8128 Kbps.
I've waited over a week and it still hasn't increased to the normal speed.

The only changes I have made in the last month that might have caused this is the location of the router and the new wireless house phones which might be causing interference.
However looking at the router stats the downstream margin, etc. doesn't seem to be the problem so I don't understand why the sync rate won't increase.

Do you know why this might be happening?

The margin appears to have been bumped up as the BT kit has seen either instability or an increase in the amount of errors on your line.

Have you reverted to the previous location and removed the cordless phone temporarily. SNR reductions can take 2+ weeks of stability/no errors to reduce.

You had that low sync a while ago it seems, as you apparently never deliberately re-sync.

The speed can only increase on a re-sync. So do one now and I think you will find everything is fine.

It will then take a few days for your IP Profile to rise accordingly, before your download speed rises.

It would be a bit of a pain moving the router to it's previous location now because I'd need to run ethernet cables all over the house to the different computers which don't have wireless cards.

I think it happened when we had a lot of snow here so it might have been the weather that caused instability.

Do I just need to wait for BT's kit to reduce the SNR now then?

Exactly the same as they were previously.

OK. If you were on a 6db profile before the move, and now on 12db. Even if the SNR is lowered, it is doubtful that you will get 8128k back again.

Agreed - something is well and truly screwed there.

I reckon if the target noise margin gets back to 6dB the highest possible sync would be about 5600kbps, probably lower.

What is very strange is that the sync speed is identical to before though. Very unusual.

I just moved the router to the master socket and the stats changed to this;

Downstream Rate: 6624 Kbps
Upstream Rate: 448 Kbps
Downstream Margin: 12 db
Upstream Margin: 24 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 25
Upstream Line Attenuation: 14

Which is looking a lot more normal... I've moved it back to the study (where it was initally) and it's still syncing at 6624 Kbps with the same noise levels.
It could have been the router failing to update the stats properly; it's quite an old and unreliable router.

Do you know when the downstream margin should decrease allowing me to get my 8128 Kbps sync back?

I doubt it would be the router failing to update.. more something to do with the line.

Yes, you should just be able to get the 8128 back now but it will take time. The more you move, resync, reboot and so on - the longer you may have to wait as BT do often class this as instability.
