Question about usage

[link to this post]

Hello all, brand new Plusnet user here - went live today at about 3pm and I have a question about usage.

According to my control panel I have already used 1gb just in 'web' usage - can this be right? It's a while since I have been on a metered bandwidth service but I would have expected to use maybe 1gb web usage per week nevermind in 9 hours.

All I have done is browse websites, check email, forums, facebook etc for a few hours. The majority of that time my computer has been on with a gmail window open, but not actually in use. I have not done any streaming or uploading or downloading files etc (a little p2p downloading, but that usage is listed elsewhere).

Do you think there may be something wrong here, or have I just underestimated how much is used just from simple surfing these days? If I can use 1gb in just 9 hours all my usage is going to be gone in less than a week - this is disastrous!

I always shut down the browser (Firefox) when finished on the web.

So far today I've used around 280MB, got a warning email from maaf saying I was getting near my monthly 5GB usage.

Edit >>> spelling errer tongue

Facebook can use a lot of bandwidth as people are putting on lots of pictures and I believe videos

I suggest you download Networx and monitor your usage for yourself: http://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/

Thanks all.

Last night I was sure to turn my computer off when I went to bed and when I turned it back on today no more peak usage had been used, so I think I can rule out someone piggy backing my connection etc.

I have installed the script mentioned so I can monitor it myself, I have been running it for about an hour and the results are already very different to what Plusnet is reporting. Networx says I have used 58mbs total (which still seems awfully high to me just for an hours web browsing!) and Plusnet say 104mbs - so it looks like they are basically doubling it.

Obviously I need to keep an eye on things and continue to monitor things for a few days, but I guess as a rookie my question is where do I even begin on troubleshooting this? Do I contact Plusnet or is the issue more likely to be something on my end?

Thanks
