To leave or not to leave

[link to this post]

Hello All
I have been with Force9 (plusNet) for around 12years i think LOL from the 2400 14400 modem days anyway. Right I have always had what i consider slow speeds. I get a max of 1.3meg d/l speed thats after 12pm and before 7am. Im on the premier plan at £21.99 20meg allowance which enables me to download without restriction (not part of my allowance ) till 4pm. I was thinking of moving to the cheaper one at 15.99 which gives me 80g allowance but cuts of the unmonitored at 8am so effectivly giving me half the time for my full speed d/l Then again if i left it running all day and night i may still be in my allowance at 80g with only 1.3m max d/l speed and around .6 in daytime. I have been told to try to use the engineers socket which is behind the master BT socket. As from my modem and line readings the tech says i should be able to get better speebs? But not had chance as yet as all my cabling is fixed in place upstairs between two routers. Any way What i had decided to do was move over from F9 to Virgin as nomatter what other ISP i used i would still be using the phone line and it looks as thouth that is my speed limiting factor,, Hence the Virgin Cable direction I have picked up small things Such as if i do this then when i move ask for a downgrade to PAYG becaiuse it still enables you to get contact with F( should i need to also keeps my account open and still keeps my referals building up not a lot but still its there. I have been told that also i have to pay £25 if im going to get rid of the phone line. As i was going to go fully Cable. But i thought that if i went PAYG and kept the phone line a couple of month then If i did not get on or like Virgin It would be no hassle in coming back Because the only reason im leaving ( Well thinking about it) is the d/l speed Also i have a Domain with F9 would they still host it if i was on PAYG and had the phone line with them. or would i need to either move it or pay them to host it. (Any thoughts on a Hosting Company Cheep one please lol) Any way these are my delemas??? Anyone have any good help or suggestions.... pls

Many thanks for your Time

Regards Andy

Other than using the carriage return to make your post easier to follow smile
The first thing to do is post your router stats - noise margin, attenuation and speeds as this would give a fair indication as to whether your internal wiring could be a problem. This link should tell you how to get them http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php

Hi Andy - you're post is extremely hard to read I'm afraid, but to pick out this point - if you want faster download speeds, why not choose the PlusNet Pro package ? That'll give you unrestricted downloading 24/7, but you'd have to watch your usage between 8am - midnight. It's something I'm currently considering and it'll save you £2/month.

Edit - ah, after re-reading your post it looks like your line is the problem, not PlusNet's throttling ? If that's the case, then you either have to sort that out or look at Cable, as you suggested.

What type of downloading are you doing ? If you're on Premier Option 1 like me, then P2P is restricted between 12pm and 12am (See here : http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/products/archi...

I'll send you a PM regarding cheap website hosting.

Hi

Firstly sorry about how the message.reads I will try better this time LOL.
As for downloading its mainly TV thats in the unmonitored usage times and FTP and other stuff i.e.Games and streaming vid cams during monitored times If there is something special i need then i let it run over i use about 12g of my allowance and around 80-100g in the unmonitored times

Secondly here are the Modem/Router Stats
Thomson SpeedTouch 780
Link Information

Uptime: 1 day, 19:07:14
Modulation: G.992.1 Annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 1,056
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [GB/GB]: 4.85 / 8.61
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 11.5 / 16.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 30.0 / 52.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 21.0 / 6.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / ALCB
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 61 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 1,190 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 106 / 71,241
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 88 / 159
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 48 / 120

Iv been through this via the ticket system and its from that they have come up with the idea of trying the engineers socket.
So all i have to do now is try the engineers socket to see if this helps. I was going to get a 10m shielded ADSL lead rather than move the modem/router because this is where i have terminated all the cat5 from the various rooms and sockets in the house Or move the modem/Router and put in another router to connect the original to via a 10m cat5 lead ?? Which way might be best for less signal loss?

Regards Andy

Now the good news.
With that attenuation you should be getting speeds well over 3000kbps.
As a first go I would temporarily move the router and get a length of Cat5 cable to connect from the router to one of the computers (if one is a laptop you could move it next to the router for the test) then report back the stats - this will tell us if the problem is inside your property or outside it.

Problem: Downstream attenuation is very high at 52dB.

Problem: Downstream sync speed of 1056 kbit is 4136 kbit slower or 20 percent of the average for connections with the same downstream attenuation of 52dB.

Problem: Output power down (16.0dBm) is very low. Most common values are 17 to 19.5dBm.

Problem: Router is using ADSL mode; this may be because of poor line conditions. ADSL2+ mode should result in a faster speed on most lines.

Problem: Signal Noise Margin Up (21dB) is higher than average and may be this high in order to compensate for current/previous high error rates.

Problem: There are some FEC Up errors. FEC errors are *corrected* errors, so these are probably nothing to worry about. Speedtouch routers have a habit of misreporting FEC errors anyway.

Hello
Right Thanks for the reply it sounds very encouraging
Well the Modem/Router is a 780WL so i could just move the modem and log on via wireless. that will be ok wont it?

I have also been reading other posts and for One ive not filtered the bell wire LOL
I will have to have a look at the web page of things to check with the home wiring lol
Iv also been trying to put my stats into the ADSL and ADSL2+ Line Capability Estimator I can see the Db readings for the Att and noise margin But not sure where the Sync Speed is shown??? Sorry for sounding a bit dence im not usually

regs Andy

P.S. What about this ADSL 2 will that be available on my exchange or??? Post code S43 1HG

It is already enabled on your exchange but that won't do very much for you even after you have sorted out your wiring.
Yes you can logon by wireless - no problem
The checker will be useless with your present speed.
Kitz checker for your post code comes up with a speed of 3,500 on ADSL and ADSL2

Hello WOW

All Problems no solutions And No suggestions of anyway to sort or get around them? Or am i missing that part of the message?

@BatBoy
Points you make
The product he is on doesn't support ADSL2
Noise margin 21dB is the up noise margin - down margin is 6.5dB
Error rates are low for the attenuation and noise margin over 43 hours
