ADSL2+ next spring on my local EXchange

[link to this post]

On the front page of this site is the latest list of exchanges that will be converted / moved onto ADSL2+ next spring, my local exchange is on the list <yippee>

What will this mean - a new router I guess, how long does it take to actually get the newer service after BT make their bit available.
Currently get about 5.9Mb/s - what improvement could I hope to get.

or is it a poisoned chalice.

Thanks for your comments

Most people getting above ~ 4Mb see an improvement when moving to ADSL2+, others can comment on how much faster your specific line may go.

In terms of how long before you move on to ADSL2+, this will depend on your ISP, some are quicker than others - and some may look for you to commit to a new contract in order to upgrade you, not sure if any charge more though.

Would help if you give your attenuation figure.

I've just switched to ADSL2+ and had, prior to move, similar speeds to you.

My new figure, after a couple of days, are

Uptime: 1 day, 1:49:36
DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 714 / 8,566
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]: 52.35 / 198.02
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.5 / 20.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 23.0 / 39.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 8.0 / 6.0
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / TSTC

Which site?

The bad news is I doubt if you will get much improvement, though the upstream will be higher. You could also get hassle as the BT ADSL2+ system is far from bug-free.

What router have you got already? And which exchange is it?

Providing you are on one of the products that support it - basically all the current products - there is no charge or increase in contract length to move to it.
Regarding your router - what is the make and model - although most of the modern ones support it.
I am not sure how quick the change over is as there are two steps - moving to 21CN and then to ADSL2+. The one which takes the time is moving to 21CN as that requires changes in the exchange where your line is moved to the new equipment, This is usually done as a bulk order but not necessarily.
Regarding experience have a read of the relevant threads here http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/board,3.0....

Thanks for all your coments - to answer your questions:

Which site am I referring to - The ThinkBroadband entry page - one of the news items was about the roll out to additional exchanges of ADSL2+

My stats
From the Draytek Syslog program collection data from the Vigor 2500v router modem
SNR Margin 7.7
Loop Attenuation 31.4
Up speed 448000
Down speed 7616000
Plusnet Package - Plusnet Pro

Again thanks for your info

Ahhhh!!!

You meant you get 5.9 actual speed.

Your connection speed is 7616 (interleaved by the look of it), and on ADSL2+ you could get about 16Mbps connection. So over 12Mbps actual download.

What exchange is it though?

Horndean

The 5.9 was from the Speedtest site, the 7616 is from the Draytek stats

It's always the stats we need to give a good idea of expected speeds smile. Speedtest results are affected by too many things.

But!

Why on earth aren't you already on O2 LLU? It's great - any bad reviews or ratings are because of the non-LLU O2 Access.

You would get ADSL2+ immediately, with no BT aggressive IP Profiles and noise margin management. It is true unlimited with no traffic management and you expect about 84% of connection speed at all times. (70% during World Cup and Tennis).

O2 Premium is £15pm, or £10 if you can quote an O2 mobile phone number against it. Currently three months free, and expiring today or tomorrow £75 cashback through Quidco or TopCashBack.

So that is at most £60 for the whole first year, and possibly as low as £15.

You can sign up through those two sites without a MAC and supply it later. Just make sure you clear cookies first.
