ftp is read only, why?

[link to this post]

It seems that when I login to my PlusNet webspace with ftp I cannot upload new files to the space. It is read-only. This is the case when using my Apple laptop at home (on PlusNet) and on my PC at work (on Demon).

Am I missing something I need to configure for read-write access?

Which directory are you trying to write to?
I mean: you are in htdocs directory or a subdirectory... and not your root directory or logs directory?

If it makes any odds I do not have an ftp proxy configured at home and I am using PASV mode.

Then I've got no idea really
I suppose it's worth checking that the permissions do show correctly - but I doubt very much that this is an issue.
Otherwise, are you able to try FTP manually from the command line to see exactly where if fails - or get your FTP client to log the dialogue?
I've never had a problem (other than getting permission denied in the root directory), so I'm at a loss to suggest anything else...

You cannot login to your ftp site unless it is from a Plusnet IP address. That's what I was told when I downgraded to dial up.

That only applies to the ccgi server. Your www webspace can be accessed and updated via FTP from any ISP connection.

"I suppose it's worth checking that the permissions do show correctly..."

Using ftp in the browser gets me an error saying index.html cannot be modified.

Using command line ftp gets the following:

230 User xxxxxx logged in.
Remote system type is UNIX.
Using binary mode to transfer files.
ftp> ls
229 Entering Extended Passive Mode (|||3653|)
200 EPRT command successful

421 Service not available, remote server timed out. Connection closed

That was going to be my next step.

I just wanted to see if I could eliminate anything obvious first.

cheers
