Can anybody explain this usenet problem?

Myself and a friend use Plusnet for our connections, mine is premier and his is plus, both are maxdsl 8Mb. We both want to use newsdemon (ND) for binary usenet.

Here is where we both are confused:
Using either mine or his Plusnet (PN) account at my house I have full access to ND on port 119.
Using his PN account at his house he can not connect to ND on any port but using my PN account he has no problems at all.

Just to re-word that to hopefully prevent any confussion...
For the 2 experiments at his house he used the same hardware, software and phone line the only thing different is the account at PN that he connected to.

Any helpful advice would be nice.

Broadband Plus is traffic shapped to hell, meaning anything that is p2p or usenet will not work, or works soo slowly its not really worth it.

If he wants to do p2p and usenet, then get a proper Plusnet account (or a different ISP)

I'll re-word my experiments:
Using the same hardware, software and phone line I have no problems at all with binary newsgroups on port 119 using either my PN account or his.

During the day both accounts are shaped giving no more than about 100KB/s but during the night both run at around 500KB/s (I don't get the full 8Mb)

At his house:
His account gives no access, mine gives full access

What type of account does he have?

Do you mean that when he comes to your house he connects through your router using his PN ADSL username & password, and when you go to his house you connect through his router (or modem of course) using your PN ADSL username & password?

Or do you mean that you use his connection (i.e. he's already synced up through his own PN ADSL username), but when you run the Usenet client you put in your Usenet username & password?

If that is the case, then although you are trying to download from Usenet using your account details, your are still using his connection...connected using his PN username.

Which would mean that his line is still shaped.

I wasn't aware that it was possible to go along to another house with another ADSL line and initiate an ADSL connection using a different ISP. For example, my mate is on BT, but I'm sure if I configured his router with my PN account details it wouldn't connect.

Somewhere correct me if I'm wrong here.

It isn't, unless 'Service Selection Barring' is misconfigured. However in the OPs case they are both on Plusnet.

One of the Plus.net reps said a while back that as long as both users are on the same realms then it should be possible for 2 different Plus.net accounts to be alternated on the same BT phone line.

It's great for testing if someone's account is being shaped, for example.

I have used my home account here at work when our business line was having problems

I hope that it didn't eat up too much of your peak time allowance though...
