Question about cancellation...

[link to this post]

Just migrated to Zen today and received this email from plusnet:

In reply to:

Your request to move away from PlusNet has been received and processed.

Move details

============

Move date: 20/09/2006

Moved from: PlusNet Broadband Plus up to 8Mb (Monthly Contract, No Modem)

Please note: Your account will be cancelled in 60 days time. Up until then
you will have access to your PlusNet email and webspace, after which these
will be stopped.

I was on a one month cancellation contract and I got the MAC key on Friday 15th Sept. It doesn't mean I will be billed for another 2 months service will I? I knew I have to pay the last months bill which is due on the 29th, but am I ok to cancel my Direct Debit after that last payment comes out of my account?

You should only get the one more bill (if they do bill you at all) and you can request a refund for the time from 30th Sept to 15th October as you will have paid this over the 30 days notice required. My experience when I moved out was that the refund was processed automatically for me.
Also there have been some changes recently regarding the notice periods etc. Although 30 days notice are required I cannot be sure yet whether they will take a payment due after the migration out. One post I read gave me the impression that after you have migrated out then they don't take anymore payments.
The 60 days bit is because your account is now a PAYG dialup account (AKA free account). If you don't dialup (or it used to be OK to collect mail) in the 60 days then the accounts are automatically closed.

does collecting emails keep the account live then, as i'm just about to migrate to UKFSN (tomorrow) but didn't plan on losing my old email address??

Thanks

Darren

It always used to but I am back with Force9 again after 3 months of truely appaling service from Eclipse. In those 3 months I only ever collected mail and never dialled up and my account wasn't closed. The email does suggest it may be slightly different now though (most other providers require dail up to keep accounts open as this is the only means of generating revenue to pay for the account).

Edit to add: I found it always worthwhile to request the account be migrated to Dialup PAYG Free account as well in case the CS Agent does close the account instead of downgrading it. All that you need to do is add to the migration ticket tomorrow as soon as the migration completes.

hi was the 15th the date you requested your MAC?.

I also left PN today, but I cancelled by DD as I do not want them to take the full amount, then try and get a refund. (if their billing system is so bad, the should give the last days free)
If they send me a bill will the correct amount I owe them, I will pay (by cheque).

Yeah I asked for it on Friday 15th in the morning, and got it through by lunchtime! I'm now connected with Zen as of this morning. Funny thing was, I expected the connection with plusnet to cease before I could connect to Zen - but I was still online with plusnet until I changed the user/password to the zen account.

Getting back to the direct debit - I don't know if it's a good idea cancelling the last payment without plusnet knowing?? But I can see your reasoning for doing so

I did tell plusnet that was doing that.
If they can't take the correct money, that is their problem not mine.
I was confused too, as I thought PN would cut me off then I log into my new ISP (AOL)
Must be PN stops when you log off, and as my router is always on, that hadn't happened.

In theory, when BT complete the migration you should lose your connection and not be able to log back on until you change the username/password. In practice though you tend to stay connected until either you disconnect (and then can't get back on with the original details) or the ISP you migrate from cancel your service.
