PlusNet DNS Servers

Folks,

Looking to setup static IP on my PC for portforward purposes............ If you do this, I must specify DNS servers in XP Network Connections.

So, please could someone confirm the PlusNet servers, and any preferences for primary and secondary if they're are more than 2.

My plusnet portal settings suggest;
212.159.13.49
212.159.13.50

Though I've had both the router and the XP network connection set to auto obtain and this usually produces 212.159.6.10 and 212.159.6.9

You can use all 4, and since xp allows the setting of more than 2, add them all.

Usually your router will handle the DNS i.e. you can set the DNS IP to that of your routers LAN IP address

Personally, I'd look around and use DNS from more than one ISP.

There have been problems every X months with wrong info in the PN nameservers, but I suppose the one time I'd want to use them was (this is hypothetical, as I host domains elsewhere anyway) if moving a domain away, so one could see what PN's nameservers were reporting for PN customers, and (via dnsreport.com or similar) what the 'rest of the world' would be seeing. There can be real problems and someone reported it taking over a week to resolve {sorry about the pun}

I actually use treewalk dns to provide my own DNS server. Its free and works perfectly for me

Is that something that runs on your existing PC or another one on a network at home?

You can have a static IP but DNS set by DHCP I think?

Its just a program that can run on any PC (use 127.0.0.1 as dns server if you run it on the pc you are using), although for me I run it on my desktop as that is always on, even though I use laptops for general use normally.

That's clearly an option, but when it comes to giving someone else advice, I'd tend towards using a few IP addresses in the TCP/IP setup, which will still work if they switch to some other OS, and no software or firewall issues to worry about.

I've not looked at Treewalk recently but while I expect few problems, one could have different questions getting it working on Win 95, OS X, and under MS-DOS (only).
