Password generator & 'wallet'????

[link to this post]

Hi All

Much has been made of the need for strong passwords when using the internet and I am sure that in common with many hereabouts I use a range of passwords depending on the site/usage I am making of a service.

I have also asked for PlusNet to return the days of stronger passwords ~ most of mine exceed the current 5-8 including a number constraint, because that is what used to be allowed!!!!!!!!! But I am loath to change my 'username' password at this time.

So, to my subject of the post is there a good password generator that is also a password wallet i.e. protect all my passwords in a encrypted form with one master password. If this can auto fill by some sort of selection method any web form so much the better. But what it does need to be is a standalone program i.e. one that does not need to be installed as such ~ in other words self contained in its own 'installed' folder without "fingers" in the Windows OS. This would also mean you can carry it with you on a USB stick if needed.

Any ideas?

TIA

Try this one here

http://keepass.info/

Think it should fit the bill for most of what you are looking for. It has also recently been reviewed by PC Pro along with a few others. May be worth checking there site to see if any info is available.

I may be wrong, but I think that even if your password exceeds 8 characters, it only looks at the first 8.

take your pick note that these are designed to be memorable, rather than totally random.

No suggestions on a wallet, though. Have you thought about good old pen and paper + simple code? (e.g. if the password is a1B2c3 write it down as a2B3c4)

That used to be the case with Unix but not sure if it still is.

I use password safe (mentioned by someone else) http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net/

As for a "wallet" I have a USB key that has the password safe copied on to it. It is possible to run it directly from the usb key and I take it everywhere with me on my key ring. The safe is encrypted with a master password and you can double click on an entry and paste the password rather than typing it so it wouldn't get picked up by key loggers.

You can also try here:

http://www.u3.com/

There is all sorts of software that will run from a U3 standard thumbdrive, including password vaults.

Trouble with password safe is that sometimes it doubles the length of the password event though the orginal can be viewed .. you cannot double click on it. It is a bit arbitary like that ..some it takes some it doesnt. But then you can copy and paste so it defeats key loggers and its free,

Alas some keyloggers also capture the Windows clipboard.
