Odd account issues.

[link to this post]

Okay, I never used postmaster or [email protected]. This is against the T&C's but everything was always passed onto my 'contact' email address to, so not a problem. I just didn't like the idea of such default mailboxes.

Recently I went back to have a look at things and setup POP3 access to both accounts to see what was in them and if any redirects were around (none were shown on the portal). There was no mail in either account and sending a test e-mail to both addresses resulted in nothing. No problem, I never used them.

But then today I changed my password for my main account. A notification was sent to both by 'contact' email address and username@username,plus.com. I also suddenly started receiving the same spam in this mailbox as the others, so it was obviously harvested.

So what's going on here? The mailbox was receiving no mail, not even the recent announcements on security etc. And yet when I changed the password it seemed to re-awaken this dormant account.

Odd.... anyone at PlusNet have any explanations?

Just a quick bump to see if anyone knows what may be going on here.

Before changing the password any e-mails sent to postmaster@ or username@ were lost to a black hole.

After changing the password all mails to postmaster@ or username@ (along with the spam) are showing up in the mailbox.

It's very odd and worrying that an account could have 'stalled' in this way. As it wasn't accessed for so long (if ever) I suppose this could be a problem for ages ago with the account not being fully activated. Changing the password could have triggered the activation of the account.

It was still harvested by the spammers it seems

It would appear that PN had/are having problems with password changes on their system and not being propagated properly. The same happened two months ago when people were asked to change their password. By changing passwords it also seems to disable the blackhole functionality and almost impossible to switch back on. See my blog for just such an issue that is still unresolved after 9 days.

It could be that I'd formally blackholed my username@username address. Although it must have been at a point when PlusNet allowed this (I remember when I could get all sorts of fun change made at a whim in the middle of the night ).

Woah!

I've just checked and the catch-all is now ON on my account and sending stuff to username@username. It's always been OFF. I did NOT change this myself.

There is also now an alias which was NOT previously present. postmaster is now an alias to username.

Basically, either because of me changing my password, or because of someone else changing things, the behaviour of my mailboxes has changed. And I can't say I'm too happy about that.

I've just recieved notification to my 'contact' and postmaster addresses stating

In reply to:

Thanks, you've successfully created your new alias.

Alias name: postmaster

You can now start to use this straightaway.

So it looks as if...

Changing my password de-activated any blackholing in place and turned a Catch-All on, sending all mail to username@.
Turning the Catch-All back off created an alias from postmaster@ to username@ in the portal BUT that redirection was already occuring as soon as the account was 're-activated' by changing the password.
