Another speed question?

I have previously posted about the evening (4pm to 1am) slowdown but this past couple/few days I have seen something else a litle wierd.

I typically sync at the 3700 mark whatever Gateway I seem to be connected to and based on that I normally get speeds of approx 3200 - other than the periods of slowdown mentioned.

But for the last few days the best speed is approx 2600.

Are there any known incidents that would create this "change"?

Only thing I can think of is the weather. BT's old system and old copper wires are getting very damp all over the country.

I had not thought of that! If that is the case the copper wires are likely fine it is more where the copper meets the cheap'n'cheerfull aluminium wires and the points of corrosion that these can cause Grrr!!!!

Yeah it could be, I believe there are often problems when wiring that is underground gets sodden.... but things improve when they dry out. So more a conductivity issue than corrosion, but that could well be a problem too.

If anyone has any more concrete or first hand experience it would be interesting to hear.

Yeah, I've seen a number of cases like this over the years. Strangely water logged cabling can have an effect on throughput speed as well as sync speed. Some people that have seen this problem can predict down to the minute when the problem is going to start because of how much rain and for how long, certainly helps with diagnosis to establish a pattern.

I guess throughput would be impacted if there is a lot of error correction going on.

The idea of predicting down to the minute seems like fun. I can imagine someone having a rain gauge hooked up, with a small electronic switch so that when the water reaches a certain level a big red light comes on next to their computer/router.

Probably more a case of it's been raining half an hour broadband's about to go slow...
