can rain / wind affect bb speed?

[link to this post]

reason I ask is i'm getting 40 or less on downloads at the moment either though my sync speed is 8 - 9 hundred which should give me around 80 on downloads.

Have you checked your IP Profile by running the BT speedtest?

http://speedtester.bt.com/

Wind/rain can affect the speed you sync at. BT will then lower your IP Profile. Even if you shortly after sync back at your normal speeds it can take BT 2 or 3 days to raise your IP Profile again.

ok well i did the bt speedtest and this is what it said -

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 992 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 84 kbps

so i really can't understand where my speed has gone and why bbc iplayer will not let me watch anything with out pausing every few seconds (i've tried late at night and this afternoon)

Hiya,

Basically you've had a really slow sync event - Which isn't massively surprising with the current weather. Because of that, BT have set a really low profiled speed, which should increase in a cvouple of days or so.

Do you know what your synchronisation speed normally is?

So at some point your router resynched at a very low level.
Can you the stats from your router (up and down)
Attenuation
Noise Margin
Synch speed

That's possibly because of the noise on your line, which may have increased because of the weather.

Like I say, give it a couple of days and hopefully it'll sort itself out.

In reply to:

i really can't understand where my speed has gone

It has gone because of that IP Profile, which is what actually determines your maximum download speed. 135kbps is not enough to stream anything.

Have a read of this bit of FAQ.
