Router error report help

[link to this post]

My shiny new Plusnet supplied Thompson TG585v7 router reports the following :

DSL Type: G.992.1 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 5,664
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 19.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 21.0 / 39.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 22.0 / 15.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / TSTC
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 83,017
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 26
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 24

Should I be concerned about all those FEC errors, whatever they are?

The time since last sync would be useful, as it's the rate FECs increase that matters not the number. (Unless it's up in millions within minutes. Even then it's the rate).

What you should be looking at is why you have an SNRM of 15.5 and a pathetically low sync of 5664 on an attentuation of 39dB.

Have you ever checked your phone wiring?

No data transfer and a lot of FEC errors - major problem perhaps

Not really as my Thomson has been connected for nearly 6 days and shows no data transfer.

The data transfer actually shows under Internet Services.

I've found that Thomson routers show high FEC errors without there being any other problems.

Both Thomson wireless router I've had have given high FEC errors - 2wire figures were much lower.

Overall they don't seem to be causing any other problems and connections have been pretty stable.

14/10/08 19:00 128.39 Kbps 372.11 Kbps

Whilst my 30 year old internal telephone wiring may be ailing, I suspect the correlation between wet weather and slower speeds probably mean yet more roadworks are most likely to improve my sync and SNR.

Our house was built 1975 and still has GPO cover plate with hard wired extensions.

I found a significant speed improvement when I disconnected ring wire inside extension socket - worth a look.
