Line Speed

my parents are with Plus.net (ADSL Max), when they moved to their new house i set up the router for them, at that time i cant remember what speed they were getting but it was OK

their router is connected to an telelphone extention that was put in by sky (previous occupants had it done), the master BT socket is near the front door, when my dad brought one of the prams in one day he accidently hit the extention socket which caused it to crack, they had difficulties with the line, they could here the phone ring and hear people but couldnt dial out or talk to anyone

so to stop it happening again i wired the extention directly into the main BT socket, this allowed them to have their phone back and net connection, but its only connecting at 512 down and 256 up, i have tried swapping the extention wires at the main socket, White and Blue to 2 and Blue and White to 5 and vice versa, this doesnt improve the line speed at all

after scratching my head for a while i found out that my dad put his telelphone on ex directory, what im hopefully trying to find out is, would going ex directory do anything to the net speed? does it involve some modifications at the exchange, something that might cause the net speed to drop to low?

It does sound a bit like you might need to get BT in to sort out the wiring. Do you still hear noise on the line?

Going ex-directory will have no bearing on your sync or throughput speeds.

Do you fancy PMing me your username so I can run a couple of connection checks of my own? It sounds like you're on a fixed 512Kbps service.

This could mean many things, people will be able to advise if you can get a picture online of both ends of the extension

The attenuation figure will help to reveal if the line is seriously under performing currently

that is from Linksys WAG354G V2 , the router that is always connected to the line

That is a fixed 512kbps connection. On ADSL Max it should be sync'ing at 8128 down and 448 up, as it is a very good quality line.

How or why it has become a fixed 512 is another matter. If you haven't PM'ed Metronet_James like he suggested, then do so, including those figures.

yes i pm'ed him on the day, just tried my Sky router at my parents, synced at 512 (576) 256 (288), not sure about disconnects as the Sky router is very limited in what it can do and what you can view, kind of annoying

as for being fixed 512, not sure how it happened, time for PlusNet to jump in and get a BT engineer to take a look, as i am stumped

It's nothing you did your end. Probably just a mix-up at somewhere and it was done instead of someone else's line, and just a coincidence that you worked on the wiring.
