Whats the difference?

[link to this post]

Hi there,

Could one of you guys explain what the difference is between Option 3 and Pro please?

How is Plusnetsbroadband service and customer support?

Thanks.

In a nutshell:

Both have the same price

Option 3 gives you 30GB Usage with some throottling applied to p2p & Usenet

Pro gives you 15GB Usage with "No" Throttling to any of your traffic on any protocol

For full details of the Traffic profiling, go to Kitz' excellent website.

Service and Customer Service is excellent.

Doesn't Pro also get priority when things get busy, to keep latency down for gaming?

Option 3 throttles P2P, Usenet and also FTP and Download Sites and Servers; upload and download speeds are rate limited.
E.g. During the evenings, an 'up to 8Mb connection' will be artificially rate limited to a quarter of a Mb download speed using the P2P protocol, regardless of potential top speeds.

The only difference in Traffic Proritisation between Pro and Option 3 is the latter classes P2P, Usenet and Other as Silver not Gold. Gaming is classed as Titanium on both packages.

This means that Titanium classed protocols are given priority over lower Gold, Silver and Bronze classes.
At peak times, packets classed as anything below Titanium are dropped by the network which induces artificial packet loss, preserving bandwidth for Titanium packets.

This is happening by design, although the intentional design is to have no Gold packets dropped during peak, after a couple of years of Ellacoya tweaking, Plusnet have not yet managed to stop Gold packets dropping.

Therefore, even though protocols on Pro are not throttled, they are subject to induced packet loss during peak times.

Except for the Titanium gaming packets if I read the rest of your very good post correctly?

Ahh right, thanks for the info guys.

How much would an extra 5gb be? I'm not sure 15gb would be enough.

Is there a FUP / cap on the midnight-8am time band?

Thanks.

Yes, that is correct, or indeed any trafiic that is classed as Titanium, which is basically Gaming and VOIP.

This page should answer your questions.

There's no real FUP in place for overnight use - you can download as much as you like!

I don't believe so; I racked up 200gig offpeak usage last period, and about the same the month before, not heard a peep from Plusnet to tell me to stop it - and if they did, I'd be the first to post on the forum about it
