Thinking of joining

[link to this post]

Just about to make an exit from Enta and looking at what my options are

I'm looking at option 2 or 3.

Couple of questions.

1. how does the traffic shaping work? My current connection is on a profile of 3000 and my download speeds are (were ) 2900kbps. would it be noticeable?

2. Is phorm used by plusnet?

4. I have no interest in the free router, do I still have to accept the free one from plusnet?

5. Can Interleave be set to off as a default?

6. Anything else you can think of, any suggestions.

Many thanks

John

1) Traffic shaping is best explained here. Just select your Product Option http://kitz.co.uk/isp/plusnet_shaping.htm

2) No. Phorm is not implemented or planned for implementation at PlusNet

4) No. You don't have to take the free Router and if you don't, you can take the Free 90 day trial option.

5) Yes it can. Specify this by raising a Ticket

6) Remember that you get FREE usage between 00:00 and 08:00 each day. (Also, Your upload traffic is NOT counted as Usage. This is wrong.... see next post.)

Good luck with your deliberations. I am coming back to PlusNet on 6 February 2009

Edit: Correction to point 6 + typo.

Many thanks for coming back to me so fast, and thanks for the link.

Can I be nosey and ask why you left and what is making you return?

I left PlusNet almost exactly two years ago and went to NewNet. I will gladly share with you my reasons for doing this.

1) Because of personal and family committments, I needed a very reliable and responsive service. My Usage was/ is very low, under 2GB/ month but my time was at a premium and my tolerance of slow downloads was and still is very low.

2) PlusNet was going through its worst phase in the run up to selling the business to BT. They were reducing capacity but adding customers and the performance on the non-Premium services was less than acceptable. I could have moved (back) to the premium PayG product but decided to vote with my feet and went to Newnet where you pay for what you use without subsidising the hogs and although the price per GB is high, it did not matter as my usage is low.

3) Since I left, PlusNet has recovered its credibility and reputation with its users. Under the ownership of BT but under the management of the excellent team ... and I will name Ian Wild. James Bailey, Dave Tomlinson and the others who post here, they now run an excellent service which most of all is free of meddling by BT. As an example of this, note that PlusNet will NOT be implementing PHORM.

4) I have been lobbying Plusnet for the past 20 months, to offer a Pro-Lite product offering the performance of the Pro Product but with a lower included Usage and consequentially lower price than Pro. This product or a similar implementation has been in PlusNet's plan for at least six months but has been dropping down the priority of scheduling because of other imperatives.

Although the product is not yet available. I am coming back to a special offer Pro product agreed with PlusNet. All I can say is that both parties are happy but if I told you more, I would have to shoot you! Let's just say that I am a Beta tester of things that may come.....

I must remember to update my Sig.

Once again, thanks.

In my OP I said I was looking at option 2 or 3. Not true. Its option 3 or Pro at £19.95 are we talking the same pro package or something similar? Dont answer if you have to shoot me, it'll make a mess of the carpet.

Unfortunately, traffic is counted in both directions!

Hi John,

Yes, my reference to Pro is the £19-95 Pro Product. Also, my reference to PayG is the legacy PayG Product which offered the same performance as Pro but with only 2GB Included usage at a price of £14-99.

/me re-holsters the Luger!

I think that is common practice and something I amuse when shopping around. The only ISPs I can think that do not count uploads is Idnet, A&A and possibly Newnet.
