Have there been connectivity probs this evening?

[link to this post]

Yes, my old friend the random connectivity problem is back!

I've been having severe problems since about 5 o'clock. Can't see anything on the Service Status page, can't see anything on the exchange information (Filton) and haven't seen any posts here.

I have been finding tracerts were either "normal" or wouldn't work at all (about 50-50). I have been racking my brains all evening thinking something must be wrong at this end, but it seems to have spontaneously fixed itself - AGAIN (famous last words).

Have there been any known problems this evening that were fixed or improved in, say, the last half hour?

I had problems with web pages loading at around 5:30pm this evening, followed by the ppp session dropping and re-connecting, and all was fine again. So I'm not sure if that was a pipe balancing thing going on. Has new capacity been added with-in the last couple of days?

Hmmm. I can't see anything on the Service Status.

Looks like last deployment was 31st July, so not really recent enough to be a suspect.

I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting several times, in case it was a problem with a specific gateway, and also rebooting the laptop and the router, in case something had got hung-up somewhere.

But it still hasn't cured it completely, although things seem much better than they were.

I haven't been able to identify any pattern to which websites couldn't be contacted. It wasn't "all U.S. ones", or anything like that.

More like a 50-50 chance for any website.

OK, it seems like there might be something up this evening.

I am always concerned when I get problems nobody else seems to have noticed, because it means it is more than likely my kit, or my connection.

But I'm slightly reassured that other folks noticed something around the same time.

I've just seen they've posted advance notice of traffic management work early tomorrow morning. Wonder if someone started early? wink

I see from the router log that 'LCP Down' has happened twice more through the night, at about 2.30am and 3.30am. Dunno if this is a Plusnet, or exchange, or router thing. I'll see what happens through today, while I'm away at work.

Apologies everyone...

[re: TLM] [link to this post]

I think this was ME. blush

My router or my wireless network card is on the blink, or both. frown

Had terrible problems again today. Eventually, in frustration, went back to my old (wired) connection. And guess what? All is good in the world.

/Sigh

Now off to the other forums to get help faultfinding a wireless connection.

The really frustrating thing is I can see my router, and the signal strength is excellent. I just can't connect through it. I'm not being assigned an IP address, apparently. Does this point to the router itself being the problem, and not the notebook adapter?

I'm no expert, but I've experienced problems with wireless when swapping over routers. Sometimes the answer is to shut down the pc and router, then boot the router first. Other times it's been a firewall issue, having to allow the isp's DNS address's as trusted.

Good luck, it's fustrating I know.
