There has been a case recently of the details being shown against a phone number being those of a different line altogether. IIRC it was another Plusnet customer, and possibly so was the other one.

So what the ISP (even if it wasn't Plusnet) was seeing was nothing to do with what the user was experiencing.

I wonder if something similar is happening here? (Part of the edit - the BT speed test non-recognition happened there as well).

Well I've run a couple of tests and the usernames showing on a log check from the exchange match those on your account (with the other user we were seeing logins from a different ISP entirely, proving an issue with cross jumpering). I've also confirmed that the profile matches on our side and on both bits of kit at the exchange (the exchange is set to 6500 and our profile is at 7150 at present).

Just a thought - did you reboot after I made the profile change on our side last time? That might be worth a try as it might be that your router hasn't picked up the new profile yet.

IP Profile?

If so, what has a router reboot got to do with it, other than it might be screwed anyway? The effect of the IP Profile is purely at the exchange end, (and in this case somewhere in the Plusnet system), and nothing to do with the router. Download speeds increase transparently when the IP Profile rises.

Edit - remove "edited with link" from the Subject.

IP Profile wasn't mentioned - orbrey will have poked the PN profile (a.k.a Current line speed as shown on the portal) and that frequently needs thePPP session to be restarted to pick up changes, as do changes to the traffic management profile.

Ah thanks.

Which makes the idea of holding copy IP Profiles (aka Line Speed) which Plusnet and Enta do even more silly. I haven't heard of any other ISP that does this. An unnecessary frequent point of failure.

I know the reason for it is something to do with using a fraction lower within the servers to prevent queuing at the DSLAM, or something like that, but if it is so useful by now all ISPs both BTW and LLU would be doing it. For them the TCP/IP system seems to work fine without it.

That's quite apart from the IP Profile system itself .... frown

I've recently read that PN apply their IP Profile update system to Madasafish connections too frown

If BT drop traffic because it's coming in too fast it is totally random which packets get dropped, so for an individual user Usenet traffic may get through and VoIP may not.

If PN do it they will drop the lowest priority traffic first and make sure they don't send too much down the line so that won't BT do their random drops.

Makes sense to me.

Therefore all other ISPs are stupid?
