Confused

[link to this post]

Hi there. Really like this site, you guys know your stuff and seem very helpful.

Hoping you can help me get to the bottom of the problem I'm having.

Situation is, up until 6 months ago, I had an 8meg line with The Post Office. When it was initially set up there was an intermittent fault, but eventually got that traced to a break near the house, so the line from the nearest pole to the house was replaced, including fitting a new nte5 master. After that never had any complaints with it.

Cancelled the service with them 6 months ago because I was going to be away a lot, and I've been using 3g connection in the meantime when I was away and the little time I was at home.

Now I'm back to be based locally so at home I have just (2 months ago) reconnected it with PlusNet, on the Pro up to 20meg service. Initial estimate was 15meg. I would expect a reasonably speedy connection, as the exchange is close enough I could go outside and hurl stones at it (yes I have been tempted).

Since it was connected though, the router was syncing at 2meg for the first few days, then increased to 8meg. After some chasing discovered that the line was still connected to the old 20cn service (after ending service with the post office, the line maintained adsl sync, even though it had no phone/net service)

So plusnet got BT to switch me to 21CN, but it still was stuck at 8meg. Now after lots of phone calls my bt test is looking like this:

And router stats are at this:
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g40/rubb3rjohnny/2...

Which that all looks fine as far as I can tell, apart from the high snr on the upstream, otherwise I don't see anything wrong with the router stats or the config that the BT test is reporting.

The issue is the speed. It's still 8meg. All the time I was with the post office, down throughput was 6.5meg, and up was 360k. Which is what I am still getting now, on 21cn @ 500 metres from the exchange Oo
This is recent throughput readings from mybroadbandspeed.co.uk

I have been hassling PlusNet a lot, and to be fair they are trying to help. But I think it's down to something just not configured right that is throttling me down to the old speeds, and because it's not a "fault" per say, it's probably not considered high priority.

I am hoping it's a simple oversight somewhere, else I'm no better off than I was on a 3g dongle (which was cheaper)

I'm hoping someone here can just say "oh yeah that's simple, x person at the exchange just needs to do y " would be awesome.

The first thing is that the BT speedtest is quite possibly giving stupid results
What does this say about Current Line Speed (you need to be logged in) https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=data_transfer...

Looks to me like the Current Line Speed at Plusnet is the problem.

From that link you gave me:

Current line speed:
21000

Also was on the phone to customer support earlier, and I almost thought they had figured it. I mentioned something I had read about the Radius server not updating with ip profile info, so they checked it and ya, it wasn't. So they updated, I switched the router off for an hour and went out, just got back and switched it all back on... still at 6.5meg throughput.

And talking of the bt tester giving stupid results, the ones I've posted are consistent with what I'm seeing, I get similar results using other speedtests, and from the tbbMeter. Line that is configured for and by all rights should be running around 18meg, give or take. But for some reason is getting throttled down to dslMAX speeds.

I have had it give me stupid results yesterday, when it told me my ip profile was 615k or something.

One question. Your hardware is capable of greater than 8 Meg?

It might explain things if it isn't. smile

Well, some progress finally.

After a call in yesterday when they said they would be running some tests overnight, I got back in this afternoon and checked it and at last it has increased past that 6.5meg mark.

Getting 10.5meg throughput now, although still 370k upload and still the increased pings. I've been told to leave it alone for a few days now and see what happens.
