Re: Moving phone from BT and broadband from O2

Sounds good.

Don't mess with the connection until at least Sunday. The Openreach DLM controlling the line, (as opposed to the WBC one sitting on top of that which sets the IP Profile amongst other things), is very attentive until the end of the day after the day of first connection, so you don't want to upset it.

I advise contacting O2 to make sure they have received the "automatic" notification that the migration has completed.

Enjoy smile.

Is there any info on how the DLM works with fibre?

The engineer had to disconnect and reconnect it a few times after he got it working although it connected back up at the same speed each time so hopefully it'll be ok.

Nothing easy, as two DLMs are involved, the WBC one merely being used for the part of it that doesn't control the actual line settings such as the target noise margin.

The OR DLM does that.

Any specific questions I can try to answer, but an important bit of documentation, the WBC Handbook for ISPs, isn't in the public domain.

I moved away from Plusnet a few years ago due to DLM as we had an intermittant line problem where the line would occasionally drop and then come straight back up which caused the line speeds to keep dropping.

A line that should run a 5mbps connection would end up dropping down to less than 0.5 mbps.

I solved this by moving to o2 who called an engineer out several times but most importantly they just ran a fixed noise margin so my line would always reconnect at the same speed and this gave me a steady 5mbps for a few years.

Unfortunately o2/be haven't sorted out fibre yet hence me moving.

As it stands my Plusnet line profile is showing 78mbps and speedtest seems to run a consistent 74/15 which I presume is going to be fairly close to the maximum.

I'm also impressed with the ping times which seem to be around 15ms to most big servers.

One query I do have about DLM is if there is a way to shut down the modem if you need to without the exchange seeing it as a fault? Is it best to shut down for as little as possible or leave it a few minutes before restarting?

In reply to a post by StuB:
Just a follow up on my thread and to answer a few of my own questions in case anyone else searches for similar in the future.

4. Apparently it seems you don't have to do anything to notify BT and in my case the phone line is being moved 14 days after the broadband has been migrated.

I know this is an old thread so apologies, but I found it on a search. Regarding moving phone away from BT and needing to let them know, I had the strong impression you didn't need to contact them unless notification from them of the move was wrong. I did get a strange spoken SMS from them on around the 8th. I felt confident of there being no cancellation charges so did not contact them. In fact I also thought that letting them know beforehand, might result in a line disconnection and a hefty reconnection charge. I must have read of this happening somewhere (maybe here).

I have just moved BB and phone to Plusnet, but yesterday (28 Aug) got a letter from BT saying they had been told I wanted to move service and if they didn't hear from me by 22 Aug (the date the phone was transferred to Plusnet!), the service would stop. Also that there would be a 30 day line rental liability charge in accordance with their terms and conditions. I contacted Plusnet who simply quoted the 30 day thing back at me and it was up to me to contact BT! Most unhelpful.
Then today I contacted BT, who, after two internal transfers (UK>India>UK) a helpful Scottish lady first agreed that as it was a transfer the period would have been 14 days, but as I was out of contract there was no liability, and notice is by the other provider (which was on 8 Aug so 14 days). The final bill would therefore not include any such liability charge!

Was your move away from Plusnet also without need of your contacting BT?

It's been a while so I'm not 100% sure what the process was now however I don't think I had to cancel with BT at all, I think the move to Plusnet did it all for me.
