Last year when I joined Plusnet FTTC I tried pro for a month before reading about how unlimited didn't need the pro add on.

So when I saw this thread I thought I'd try it again and see what it's like now.

I'd been getting a lot of slower transfers (still quick, 4MB/s instead of 6MB/s, but not line speed) using SSH, Usenet/P2P and VPN; this was during the day (Mon-Fri). Since Pro was turned on I've seen transfer speeds go up to the maximum my link was able to cope with. So for my particular usage is seems that my line works slightly faster with it on...

Of course it's early days as I've only had it switched on for 2 days so it may be a blip.

Pro is all about traffic management NOTHING to do with increasing the speed of your line.

That's interesting timl. Is that improvement occurring when the P2P/Usenet type stuff is the only thing running through the router, or is it just when other users/jobs are doing things at the same time?

If it happens when nothing else is running, that is not what I would expect. If it happens whilst browsing/gaming/live streaming is going on, then that's the whole point of PlusNet traffic management - protecting those against possible degradation by the P2P/Usenet.

Yeah... During the day I'm the only user... and ssh/p2p/usenet transfers suffered slightly without pro and seem to have benefited with the Pro add on... So to be clear the downloads I'm seeing the biggest difference in are pretty much automated and run between about 3am and about 9am. Then some ssh transfers during the daytime. On an average download I've seen something like a 30% increase in speed. Though at other times no difference at all.

I'm with you on this I didn't expect this behaviour at all. I don't do a lot of downloading in the evening mostly others in the house are streaming Netflix, Youtube etc and they haven't noticed any difference whatsoever... even when I've done the occasional transfer

I don't think I can really draw too much from this yet as I haven't used it hugely but it seems to correlate the experience Chrysalis reported about another Plusnet user.

Off peak or on peak, if he's on Unlimited the Pro add on shouldn't make a difference!

Yep! I'm just trying to clarify.

I'm not making any conclusions that its faster yet... just that some of my downloads which last week were 5MB/s are now 7.0MB/s but I suppose this could be the remote servers having less congestion. I need much more data to make an informed conclusion.

I didn't imagine Plusnet were offering free traffic management for the user's benefit...
