All being well, BT Openreach visit after midday tomorrow and we move over to Fibre. Thing is: I've received the router from Plusnet but don't want to use it.
Pity you paid them to deliver it to you then smile

A BT engineer is coming to install fibre and the modem.

Once he's done that and gone, I can setup my trusty 7800n because I don't want to use Plusnet's Technicolor router.

It's called a backup router. tongue

I've had too many routers die on me over the years so I always accept the ISP router just in case.

Also, I don't know whether Plusnet are like other ISPs in this respect, but I always needed to plug the ISPs router into the line in the past if I wanted tech support to help me - even when the router obviously wasn't at fault.

I am not aware that that has ever been the case with Plusnet. Anyway, the router is not compulsory so it can't be.

Well, that was underwhelming.

Edit:

I'm getting 20 down. 12 up. with the Technicolor.
I'm getting 26 down 18 up with the Billion 7800n.

Plusnet estimated I would get 72Mbps down.

I have no idea how to check the actual sync speed so I'm relying on speedtest.net

I'm not sure what the modulation type is supposed to be. Everywhere says VDSL2 or G993.2 but I don't have those as options.

Ah, never mind. Please ignore the above.

It looks like the Realtek LAN adapter in one of my desktops is faulty.

On the other desktop I'm getting 70Mbps down while upstream is wavering somewhere between 16 and 18Mbps.

So, I'm happy. Thanks again for all the help. smile

There isn't a modulation when you use an ethernet WAN port on a router. (Strange that Billion use the term EWAN) That is all handled by the Openreach modem.

plusnet unlimited fibre - 2 Jun 14 - 470m - 80/20 - Summer/dry sync 55/9.4, Winter/wet sync 52/9.1
15 years broadband (1999 ntl:cable trial) - Asus RT-AC68U with HG612 - BQM - Summer PN speed - Winter PN speed

Thanks. It's all sorted now.

I'm much happier with these speeds.
