Free PlusNet broadband for two years

My first twelve months with PlusNet will shortly expire, so today I decided to bite the bullet and contact the dreaded Customer Options Team. I got through almost immediately on 0800 013 2632, and quoted a deal I'd seen for SSE Everyday Broadband + Talk Weekend, free for 2 years then £8 per month, + £12 a month line rental (none of your Line Rental Saver nonsense!). Somewhat to my surprise PN have almost matched it:

Unlimited broadband service: £0.00 per month for 24 months
Line rental: £155.88 annually
Call plan: £2.00 per month (evening and weekends)
Total £2.00 per month on a new 24 month contract

I have some reservations about SSE, because although they are my current electricity supplier, they are a bit of an unknown quantity in the broadband and home phone area. My first 12 months' experience with PN has been relatively painless, so, better the devil you know ...

So does that mean with Plusnet you'll pay £179.88 a year and with SSE it would cost £144 a year?

A few years ago I had line rental + free weekend calls with Scottish Hydro Electric (SSE) which was trouble free, however the broadband was with madasafish.

Money wise free BB would be an even bigger saver for me as I don't stay in a low cost area.

Yes

with SSE it would cost £144 a year?

Yes, except the SSE deal gives me weekend calls only. Their website doesn't quote a rate for evening and weekend calls, but I did ask them via their live chat, and I think they quoted £17pm, or £204 a year. They do have a Talk Anytime option at £20pm (£240 a year)

Interesting - I just migrated from madasafish to PN 12 months ago.

As I understand it the minimum contract length for SSE broadband is 18 months(not 24), did you try to get the same deal over 18 months?

No, I haven't been down that route. I didn't see anything on their website suggesting that such an option exists.

OK, point taken, but it looks like the SE Everyday Broadband option (as opposed to the "Simple" option, which is capped at 50GB) costs £8pm from day one (plus line rental), which I think is what the two-year 'freebie' contract would go up after the initial two years.

Thinkbroadband also shows the price fix as 24 months and minimum contract as 18 in the offers section(though for fibre).
