Removing Avast to install AVG

[link to this post]

Hello,

hope no one minds an eejit asking for help again!

I'm considering removing my Avast antivirus (free version) which I've been using for a year or two, and installing AVG instead. Not sure why, just wanted to see if it works better - I've had a couple of minor viruses found recently and not sure if it is doing a great job. (just worm type thing apparently but still)

Is AVG to be recommended? I'll only be using the free one as I am sadly poor ; ) so it might be just as fallible as Avast.
I also have Spywareguard and Comodo firewall installed, can anyone tell me please if it'll all be compatible?

Much appreciated, I came here last time to ask what to install and until recently it's all been great...just worried about those little nasties creeping in.

Thankyou very much. Oh - and how do I get shot of Avast properly, first - is there a dedicated uninstall I need to do? (fond memories of trying to boot out Norton a few years back ; )

Avg has gone downhill recently imo. And avast is bloat. I'd say go with nod32 but I'd imagine you aren't prepared to pay.

Well it would depend how much, and also how cr*p the free ones really are! I'm not good at these things so willing to listen to guidance.

Thanks for answering.

Cheers Dusty, how would I get shot of Avast - and can I run Antivir with Comodo etc or should I be using different firewalls and so on, too?

Thanks

Go to control panel add and remove or look in start programs and see if Avast has its own uninstaller.

Avast bloat?

That is the first time I have heard anyone say Avast is bloated. Avast is not bloated at all, my copy doesn't slow my PC down at all. Switch on to working in less than 30 secs on my XP and just under the minute on the wife's Vista laptop.

The only free alternative to Avast, is Avira free, which of course is slightly basic when it comes to its services, oh and you get the lovely buy me splash screen every day when it updates at the time you choose.

Use Antivir, its much much better than avast or AVG, they're both trash in comparison in pretty much every area memory usage/speed/detection/etc.

You can get a free copy (well a years license) too if you use that trial pay scheme.

Avast bloat?

Yes, large memory footprint, heavy disk usage, slow analysis. Used to be good, though.
