"Vipre is very fast & gets updated at least once a day."

It really doesn't matter whether an AV program gets updated once, twice or three times a day - viruses can exist "in the wild" for days and sometimes weeks before they appear on any virus databases. So, the efficiency of the heuristic detection of the AV program is just as important, if not more so.

I would agree with you there, most of them use the update frequency as a USP, they could all push out definitions as soon as they have found them (which would be at random intervals) without much extra work, though most decide to wait a day cycle and push out a couple at once.
