Virus whilst using messenger.

My Granddaughter has asked me if a virus can be transmitted whilst using Microsoft Instant Messenger.Not being a user I have no idea-help.

Not by just simple chatting, I would have thought, but if you start exchanging files you can be at risk, like any download.

Yes, you can get messages come up making out they are from contacts asking you to click on a link and then the website can infect your PC with a virus.
