Kaspersky ? Now as bad as Norton !

This week I needed to update my PC's in a bit of a hurry, and because I was busy with some work stuff, I got my wife to order a 3-user subscription update from Ebuyer for my Kaspersky security package, but unfortunately she bought a 3 user new installation package (easily done, because both boxes look identical).

Of course, trying to installl the new package over the old one didn't work - it installed, but it didn't update my key, so it still had 1 day to expire. I eventually found a Kaspersky remover, and I removed the application. This time the new key was accepted, but on rebooting the PC I hit a blue STOP screen, and the PC rebooted again, and the only way I could get it to restart was to "use the settings that last worked". When Kaspersky restarted, it claimed that certain parts of the installation were corrupted, and that I should repair them, and after that a reboot took me back to the STOP exception, and the whole process repeated itself.

In the end, I was so exasperated that I uninstalled Kaspersky, and I've now purchased and installed Eset Smart Security 4, which is what I'd planned to switch to this year anyway, if time had permitted. It appears to me that Kaspersky have followed the same route as Symantec, and when you have it installed on your PC, it's impossible to get rid of !

This is not intended to rub in at all - but I did tell you about these almost exact issues a few months ago, and you backed Kaspersky to the hilt

As mentioned, when its working its fine, when it throws a wobbler it is far from fine. Good luck with ESET

I had no problems with the previous version of Kaspersky, only the 2009 version. Eset is working just fine - the lighter loading on the PC is very apparent, and it also found 17 "dodgy" files that Kaspersky failed to find.

Never had any such issues like this at all, been using Kaspersky for years, renewed plenty of keys, uninstalled\reinstalled plenty of versions, including betas, along the way. The methods the op took to renew the key are a complete muddle and example on how not to install important software imo. Very simple instructions on the Kaspersky forum, and within the program itself on how to renew a license key and reinstall.

Theres certainly no recommendation from Kaspersky about installing something over the top of an existing installation generally, most software has had this approach for years and it's well known that doing so is usually asking for trouble.

Times when I've updated the version it's always prompted that a current version is detected and a couple of reboots deals with it. There should have been no need to reinstall the program itself anyway, there are clear steps within the program on how to delete\merge\renew a license key,

imo this is a clear case of RTM.

Just to redress the obvious nature of your post and the flawed tabloid newspaper thread title.

Been using Kaspersky for a year (Ex-Norton user). Only problem was with a multi-license pack. One installation wouldn't activate. E-mailed about it. Received a solution within 12 hours.

Why didn't you simply enter the new key via the "Activation" control? I've never had any problems with KAV or KIS and it certainly cannot be compared to NAV or NIS!!!

So you mess up and both Kaspersky and your poor wife get the blame. I've heard some right excuses but that one's a classic!

Never had any problems with KAV or KIS, particularly not in the area of activation, and any issues I have encountered have been dealt with fairly promptly by Kaspersky support (or their online forums/knowledgebase). And I certainly haven't had any difficulty in un-installing KIS, even the current version - unlike both Norton and McAfee.

Maybe you were just unlucky, or maybe in too much of a rush to follow the correct process. Either way, doesn't make Kaspersky a bad product.

Strange how the pro-Kaspersky fan's come out the woodwork to "protect" their beloved product. Although I have not experienced the problem you had, I have had a fair number of issues with Kaspersky and for one agree with you 100% over ESET, far better & lighter usage.

I tried that - the new key was not accepted.

Well, I was going to change to Eset this year, after Kasperky's recent fiasco where they failed to protect their own web site from attack

However, I left it to the last minute, and panicked, and chose the "easier" option. Well, it seemed easier at the time. Anyway, I'm glad I decided to go with Eset - the difference in loading on the PC is quite noticeable at times.
