Home Hub Security

[link to this post]

Friend of mine has just gone BT option 3 and is getting a wireless hub mainly because her son just got a PS3. When she gets it what does she need to do to secure it. Apparently her son's PS3 already found 3 unsecured wireless networks in the flats she lives.

I have no idea how wireless works so can anyone talk me through it to relay to her?

Cheers in advance.

Basically she sets a shared secret (passphrase) on the router and devices which are permitted to communicate. The shared secret is used to encrypt/decrypt the wireless data. Two flavours are common - WEP and WPA1/2. WEP is crackable so preferably use WPA.

The details of setting up are router and O/S specific (but quite straightforward as these are consumer devices).
