Re: useless security warnings?

Totally disagree, prevention is always better than cure.

Secunia lets you see at a glance what applications need updating and therefore closing the vunerability.

If only it was as easy as you say:
If software infected, antivirus component deals with it

There is loads of malware that is not resolved as easily as you evidently think.

It's interesting that the codes kaspersky gives are actually secunia codes, e.g. 33810 is secunia SA33810, and the turgid narrative is virtually identical.
As I noted before, though, 33810 for example says that the potential prob is fixed in v11. I already have v11... !
Anyroadup I'm grateful that the advice from you guys suggests that I'm being unnecessarily concerned.

What I 'think' is not evident. You're placing your own interpretation on what I posted.

My point was that the antivirus components effectiveness/ineffectiveness is not changed by the vulnerability alerts.

I am fully aware that no packages are totally 100% effective, but spurious warnings are not helpful.

As the OP states, one element advised an update to reslove a potential vulnerability, but he already has the suggested update installed!!

[Edit]

I've just run Secunia on my machine and it shows Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 as being 'Vunerable' and advises updating to version 9.0.0.463 (the latest available)

This version is already installed, and has been for weeks crazy

As I stated, spurious alert are not helpful. frown

I'm not going to get involved in semantics with you.

You stated on two occasions:

If software infected, antivirus component deals with it

You made a statement that was wildy innacurate and potentially harmful to those that may have taken it as fact.

As the OP states, one element advised an update to reslove a potential vulnerability, but he already has the suggested update installed!!

The main reason for this is that the older version of the software is still on the PC and therefore it is still vunerable. Java, Shockwave and Chrome (among others) are all guilty of not always removing older versions when updated.

Of course it's entirely up to you if you wish to ignore these warnings but you shouldn't be encouraging others to do so(whether intentionally or not) with nonsense like this:

Ergo: Vulnerability Warning can be turned off without compromising security

I refer you to my edited post. Version 9.0.0.463 was a 'clean' install - no prior vesions of Kaspersky installed
