Is Avast 5 Free slipping?

[link to this post]

I've used Avast for almost a year now. But of late Avast 5 seems to be slipping in my opinion. The following were found after I spotted the DNS changer had moved me to the Ukraine when I ran Hijack this!

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{202550A8-7A33-4BCA-9586-051D24DDBF8F}\RP1402\A0582354.sys (Rootkit.Agent) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{202550A8-7A33-4BCA-9586-051D24DDBF8F}\RP1402\A0582366.exe (Trojan.Banker) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{202550A8-7A33-4BCA-9586-051D24DDBF8F}\RP1402\A0582370.sys (Rootkit.Agent) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{202550A8-7A33-4BCA-9586-051D24DDBF8F}\RP1402\A0582376.exe (Trojan.Banker) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\prtprocs\w32x86\00002409.tmp (Rootkit.TDSS) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\prtprocs\w32x86\00005537.tmp (Rootkit.TDSS) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\NameServer (Trojan.DNSChanger) -> Data: 93.188.164.207,93.188.166.35 -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

Thank you Malware Bytes. It looks like I might have to move on to another AV.

I've been using Avast for a couple years now. It's a little big on memory especially on older computers with less memory but it does it's job. I installed and ran the Malware Bytes on my computer and had only the following results :

Registry Data Items Infected:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\AntiVirusDisableNotify (Disabled.SecurityCenter) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\FirewallDisableNotify (Disabled.SecurityCenter) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

It did seem strange that even after scanning the exe, that nothing was found by Avast. Then Outpost started warning me of multiple attempts of connecting to the web.

Hi, I find Avast antivirus works very well for me and I marvel at the fact that it is FREE for use. Avast antivirus Mail Shield detected and stopped a virus this morning when I accessed my mail.

I add, I do not use Facebook and have never registered with them for use.

Avast does seem to be rather late in updating defs.

Hi, that is strange, I have Avast Antivirus version 5.0.462 set to automatic, it updates the virus definitions automatically every day, and some times it might update three times in a day.

Avast voted best FREE antivirus programme http://www.isoftwarereviews.com/best-free-antivirus-...

This is a "false positive", supposedly on MBAM's part. You should restore these entries from quarantine.

How many is that now? wink
On a serious note, I haven't evaluated it but the Comodo product seems to be getting very good ratings. The Comodo firewall is an excellent product and the whole "suite" can be downloaded here. It's free and it allows the user to choose between AV or firewall or full suite at the point of installation.
