Re: Intel to buy McAfee

Intel Pressroom:

http://newsroom.intel.com/community/intel_newsroom/e...

The acquisition reflects that security is now a fundamental component of online computing. Todays security approach does not fully address the billions of new Internet-ready devices connecting, including mobile and wireless devices, TVs, cars, medical devices and ATM machines as well as the accompanying surge in cyber threats. Providing protection to a diverse online world requires a fundamentally new approach involving software, hardware and services.

With the rapid expansion of growth across a vast array of Internet-connected devices, more and more of the elements of our lives have moved online, said Paul Otellini, Intel president and CEO. In the past, energy-efficient performance and connectivity have defined computing requirements. Looking forward, security will join those as a third pillar of what people demand from all computing experiences.
The addition of McAfee products and technologies into the Intel computing portfolio brings us incredibly talented people with a track record of delivering security innovations, products and services that the industry and consumers trust to make connecting to the Internet safer and more secure, Otellini added.

Hardware-enhanced security will lead to breakthroughs in effectively countering the increasingly sophisticated threats of today and tomorrow, said James. This acquisition is consistent with our software and services strategy to deliver an outstanding computing experience in fast-growing business areas, especially around the move to wireless mobility.

McAfee is the next step in this strategy, and the right security partner for us, she added. Our current work together has impressive prospects, and we look forward to introducing a product from our strategic partnership next year.
The cyber threat landscape has changed dramatically over the past few years, with millions of new threats appearing every month, said Dave DeWalt, president and CEO of McAfee. We believe this acquisition will result in our ability to deliver a safer, more secure and trusted Internet-enabled device experience.

Sounds like the wireless / mobile market, more than the other markets.

Wait for it...

"McAfee inside" wink

I swear by Intel, and always have. I don't see any benefit[s] for the consumer at all.

I do - it should give AMD a boost while Intel go off track again

I would never forgive them for their renewals policy.

All the sheep who sign up for that pay a full price at renewal. If you don't fall for it they then offer you increasingly cheap deals as the due date approaches. I could have renewed at a 50% discount in the end. I didn't and went elsewhere for better protection.

I regard that as utterly dishonest practice.

Even if you had bought a new system that had it installed - with a FREE 12 months of 'pRot3cTIon' - the very first thing I'd do is un-install it. tongue

Eset's NOD32 is at the top of my list of recommendations.

I agree but we shouldn't forget that all these companies are in it for the money, not as a public service.

I already know that, Trevor. smirk

What would you suggest Ferrari do, if they bought Lead as a fuel?

Would you say that they are in it for the money, or would you suggest a BETTER fuel? tongue

My point exactly.

Both boards of directors have unanimously approved the deal, but the deal still requires McAfee shareholder approval and regulatory clearances.

Not a fan of McAfee, but does this mean that Intel chipsets will come with ex-McAfee 'add-ons'?

Even more incentive for me to stick with AMD for my desktops; as I have done for getting on for 10 years in my 'new builds'.

Last Intel processor I had in a desktop was in 1999, although a couple of laptops, including my current one, have been/are Intel.
