Encrypting Laptop

I want to encrypt my 1 year old Samsung q320 Windows 7 laptop.
Using True Crypt (v7) to do it seems straightforward, judging by on line tutorials
Anyboy tried it or got better suggestions?

I keep all the data I want encrypted in one folder (and its subfolders). Do you really need to encrypt the operating system and all the applications software?

As an exercise I encrypted the drives on 2 laptops last year - one Win 7, the other XP. Absolutely no problems since.
