Avast seems to be the first choice for free protection nowadays. Personally I use paid for Norton Internet Security. £20 or thereabout for three computers for a year seems quite good value. As mentioned previously, sensible operating/user practices help a lot too.

I stopped relying on Windows Defender in Windows 8 & 10 after finding malware on my PC which was not detected. AVG found and removed the malware.
