Port restrictions

Just wanted to post some information regarding the port restrictions on the sky broadband service:

The restricted ports are:

8080, 3128, 25 and 80.

So no web/proxy/smtp servers on the usual ports. They couldn't tell me about a traffic shaping policy, however they did mention that I could migrate away from the service following the conclusion of the 12month contract. Also it's a static IPv4 address.

Apologies if this is duplicated material.

there is no restrictions or port blocking on Sky Broadband

As for traffic shaping, there are no plans for this on the Base Mid or Max packages

Interesting, that contradicts what Sky just told me.

Where did you get your information from?

Someone who works at Easynet and proved the theory to us, ie demonstrated all those ports working .

Also a few members have quite happily reported that they have webservers / mail servers and FTP working as well.

When Sky first went live there was reports that there were ports closed, but as I said, the list that we saw, did not stack up to the demonstration.

However, they own the network and could restrict ports at their whim

I've just called Sky, said I was looking at getting Max and in reply to the question 'Do you block any ports?' I got the reply 'None at all'.

The one thing I'm disappointed about is that I can't have a static IP address, but for �10 a month I'm tempted to take the plunge...

Depending on how stable your connection is, if you never turn the router off (which is meant to be the case anyway) then you'll have a static IP address.

Aren't there also websites which let you have a static IP even though your ISP doesn't give you one ?

True. In fact even if you disconnect/reconnect you will probably get the same IP again (IIRC the same IP address is actually requested). I run an exchange and web server from my connection, though, so I really need it to be guaranteed static.

I need to look into these services properly, but I'm looking at dyndns.com, as there is a setting on my Netgear DG834GT to communicate with that service.

Does anyone else have any thoughts/recommendations/advice on dynamic DNS services? As I said I run an exchange and web server over the connection. My machines behind the router are all on private IP addresses.

Dynamic DNS Services (and there are many out there - just don't know them yet) are the best way to ensure that a URL is always routed to your connection.

dynDNS is one of the more popular ones and one that I reckon can be trusted for a good service - I don't know whether they allow you to register a URL with them or whether you have your own URL and the dynDNS service just sets up the DNS mapping when your router starts up but so far its the best way to host services on dynamic IP addressed connections.

Can't you use No-IP? Sorry just a way to have a static address dunno if it will help what you are trying to do

I have used dynDNS and NO-IP.

No problems with either of them.
