hard wired

I have just had broadband fitted Sky 8meg
Laptop hard wired to the router 6.4 m/bits
wireless 2 m/bits this is in the same room connected at 54mbps
using a netgear router
Should i not be getting the same whether wireless or hard wired?

Try using tcpoptimizer on the wireless adaptor.

A mate in work has just had Sky installed and is getting exactly the same thing.

What adapter are you using on your PC?

He has a Netgear WG111 that he got from Dabs.

How do you know the wireless is 2Mb/s? Are you relying on the speed stated by the wireless connection?

Is the laptop 802.11G or the older 802.11B? 802.11B is a maximum of 11Mb/s and you very rarely get that - 2Mb/s is not unusual.

If the wirless on the laptop is by a USB dongle then if it is USB1 rather than USB 2 then this will also limit speeds.

I have a 3com router (not on SKY until today - allegedly) getting 8Mb/s on BT IPStream MAX from Nildram. Wireless laptop with built-in 802.11G gives the same apparent speed as it does connect up to 54Mb/s.

The speeds quoted have been taken from adslguide.org speed test i am in the same room as the router and am connectining to the router via a broadcom 80211multiband network adapter built in to the laptop which is 2 months old so i presume it has the g range not b or whichever is the newer the connection between the router and the laptop is 54mbs (if i hover over the wireless connection indicator on the task bar)

I have just run tcp optimizer in optimize mode these are the stats that came back
Speed Down 4286.17 Kbps ( 4.2 Mbps )
Speed Up 350.84 Kbps ( 0.3 Mbps )
what settings do i need to change in tcp optimizer to increase these speeds

DITO!!!! Got activated today and have been fiddling with it all day (after easy installation). I have the 16Mb MAX subscription.

Wired I get 8Mb down/0.6Mb up. I knew I wouldn't get 16Mb down, but was a little dissapointed it was HALF! Oh well, I accept this.. BUT I also have the same problem with slow down speeds on wireless!!

I have 3 wireless cards (1 Intel inbuilt to my laptop, 1 3Com USB, 1 Edimax USB). ALL are 802.11g. I get 54Mbps connections on all except the Edimax, which is about 36Mbps.

Anyway the most important part... I only get maximum of 3Mb down!! Whether it be right next to the router or upstairs, doesn't make a difference! Upload speeds are fine, they are at 650Kbs all the time. ALL 3 cards are like this!!

I phoned up Sky, and they said to contact the wireless NIC companies :S:S. HMMMM yeah cos thats the problem!!! (sarcasm). They said because I can establish a wireless connection, that the router is fine. The only way they can offer support is if I have Sky wireless NIC!! GREAT help! :S:S He also said that they don't usually get problems with speeds if the connections are made. Hmmm, evidently not true as this thread shows.

ANY help will be most appreciated (I refuse to buy a Sky wireless NIC just to get the proper speeds!).
